Turkey Strengthen Its Forces In Somalia With AESA Radar (Video)

Turkey deployed on February 20 an advanced early warning radar in Somalia, further strengthening its military presence in the Horn of Africa country.

The radar, a Turkish-made ALP-100G, was shipped from Mürted Airfield Command near Ankara to Aden Adde International Airport near Mogadishu aboard a C-17 Globemaster III military cargo plane of the Qatar Emiri Air Force. Video footage of the delivery was posted to social networks.

The ALP-100G is a GaN based multifunction low altitude early warning active electronically scanned array air defense radars developed by Aselsan. The radar is capable of 3D detection and tracking of fighter jets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles is in the development phase.

With a tracking capacity of over 1000 targets and full 360-degree azimuth coverage, it can operate at low, medium, and high altitudes. Its range remains classified, however.

The deployment of the radar came just a few weeks after Turkey deployed American-made F-16 fighter jets at Aden Adde International Airport near Mogadishu.

Over the past decade or so, the Turkish military trained thousands of Somali soldiers both in Turkey and at its Mogadishu base, known as Turksom, to fight Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups. It also deployed combat drones, such as the TB2 Bayraktar and Akinci, in the country. Last year, it was also reported that three T129 Atak attack helicopters were sent to Mogadishu.

Turkey even delivered a number of used American-made M48 and M60 main battle tanks to the Somali military just last week.

The recent Turkish military expansion in Somalia is directly linked to Ankara’s plans to send an oil exploration platform to the country. The platform will start to drill off the Somali coast later this year. A spaceport project in northern Mogadishu is also in the planning stages.

In addition, Turkey is attempting to counter the influence of Israel, which last month became the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland, a breakaway region in northern Somalia.

With an ALP-100G  radar now active in Somalia it wont be surprising if Turkey deployed air defenses to the country in the coming weeks.
