In a first, Russia’s Rubikon advanced unmanned technology center published on September 30 video footage showing a drone strike on a Turkish-made Doruk 3D radar of Kiev forces.
Rubikon said that the radar was struck near the settlement of Druzhkivka in the direction of Donetsk, without providing any additional details. The footage published by the center suggests that the radar was targeted with a first-person view (FPV) suicide drone equipped with a thermal imager and guided via a jamming-proof fiber-optic cable.
The Doruk 3D is general surveillance radar, although the developer, RST Teknoloji, promotes it as being especially effective against smaller drones flying on lower altitudes.
The radar can reportedly detect a small drone from six kilometers, a small boat from 12 kilometers, a human from 15 kilometers, a glider from 20 kilometers, a big vehicle or a small ship from 28 kilometers and a medium size aircraft from up to 40 kilometers. It can track up to 300 targets simultaneously.
The Doruk 3D hit near Druzhkivka was deployed on a static station, but the radar can be mounted on vehicles, according to RST Teknoloji.
The company also showcased last year a counter-drone system based on the radar, with an additional electro-optical tracker and a 20 mm Gatling-style rotary cannon.
Prior to the footage published by Rubikon, there were no reports on the Doruk 3D being supplied to Ukraine. This is, however, not unusual when it comes to Turkish military supplies to the country, which are almost always kept under tight wraps.
Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, Turkey took a unique stance, voicing its support for Kiev while at the same time refusing to join sanctions against Moscow. Ankara has provided no military aid for Kiev forces, but it continues to sell weapons to the country.
The cost of the Doruk 3D is unknown, but similar radars are usually sold for a few hundred thousand United States dollars, all the way up to several millions. Thus, there is no doubt that the radar is more costly than an FPV suicide drone, which is typically manufactured for under $1,000.
Rubikon and other Russian drone units have been focused on degrading Ukraine’s intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance means along the front, targeting everything related from radars to electro-optical systems and communication terminals.
