Turksih forces involved in the operation
Turkey is not going to hand over the Syrian area of Afrin to the Damascus government if it’s able to capture it, according to Ilnur Cevik, a senior diplomatic adviser to Turksih President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
On January 20, the Turkish Armed Forces and the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army launched a military operation [dubbed Operation Olive Branch] to capture this area from Kurdish forces, mostly the People’s Protection Units (YPG). The YPG is a core of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces. Ankara describes the YPG as a branch of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) involved in a long-standing insurgency against the Turksih government.
“With the Afrin campaign “Operation Olive Branch,” Turkey is spoiling the game for Assad, the PKK and even for the Americans. Turkey aims to stamp out the PKK from Syria and hand over the lands back to their rightful owners, the Arabs, Turkmen and the Kurds.
So those who think Assad should regain control over Afrin and all the border areas across Turkey should think twice because this will never solve the vital security interest of our country,” Cevik wrote in his article entitled “The Assads hate Kurds, love PKK” on January 29.
Cevik’s article reflects the public rhetorics of the Turkish authorities on the conflict in Syria. While Ankara particiaptes in the Astana and Sochi formats backed by Tehran and Moscow, according to repeated statements of top Turksih officials, it is not going to cease its plans to expand its influence in Syria as much as its possible.

The announcements and denials of the Trump administration concerning military developments in the North of Syria reveal a heavy secret. Paradoxically, Turkey has come to the assistance of the United States to correct « the error » of their superior officers.

The denial expressed on 17 January by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson concerning the declarations of the commander-in-chief of CentCom, General Joseph Votel, on 23 December, and of the spokesman of the anti-Daesh Coalition, Colonel Thomas Veale, on 13 January, has sowed confusion.
The denial did not satisfy Turkey who, after having warned the US Chargé d’Affaires, Philip Kosnett, on the 10 January, and on 13 January, began preparing military operations in Afrine and Manbij, effectively launched them on 20 January.
Contrary to the declarations proffered by various participants, the US programme was not intended to create a sovereign, independent State in the North of Syria — that is the French plan — but a non-recognised State, like the Puntland State of Somalia or the Iraqi Kurdistan. The latter structure is absolutely independent, and despite the Iraqi Constitution, does not respond to orders from Iraq, of which it is nonetheless a part. Iraqi Kurdistan also has its own embassies abroad.
The Syrian Border Security Force should officially be composed of 30,000 men, half of whom should be ex-Democratic Syrian Forces. These combatants should receive three weeks of training in interrogation techniques and biometric scanning. 230 cadets have already followed this course.
In practice, the other half should be composed of 15,000 ex-jihadists from Daesh who would thus be discretely recycled.
In reality, President Trump’s special representative to the Coalition, Brett McGurk, was the lawyer who participated, alongside John Negroponte and Colonel James Steele, in the creation of the Islamic Emirate in Iraq in 2006. With Colonel James Coffman, he was tasked with giving President George Bush an account of this secret operation, which was intended to combat the Iraqi resistance to the occupation by dividing their forces into Sunnis and Chiites, and artificially creating a civil war.
After a passage at Harvard, Brett McGurk was re-assigned to the State Department under John Kerry. He helped with transforming the Islamic Emirate in Iraq into Daesh, and co-organised the preparatory meeting for the jihadist invasion of Iraq, on 27 May 2014 in Amman. He reorganised Iraq, then trained the International Coalition which was tasked with fighting … Daesh.
A good student, McGurk agreed to serve President Trump in order to get rid of the jihadist organisation that he had himself created, and some of whose members he is now attempting to recycle.
On 18 August last, Brett McGurk offered a friendly reception to the leaders of Daesh, although officially, the United States was preparing to crush the jihadist organisation.
The project of the Syrian Border Security Force has a lot to say about the sincerity of the YPG militia, which professes the gentle anarchy of Murray Boochkin, but which, without hesitation, are ready to form a single unit with the killers of Daesh under US command.
Contrary to appearances, the Turkish attack on Afrine, and probably soon on Mambij, was approved on 8 and 19 January by the Russian military staff, which was alerted by the number 2 of the régime and head of the secret services, the director of the MIT (Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı), Hakan Fidan, who journeyed specially to Moscow for this reason. The attack was facilitated by the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from the combat zone.
Identically, Turkey informed Syria of the attack in writing, even if Damascus claimed that it had not received the letter.
President el-Assad, who can not place his country in confrontation with the United States in order to stop the recycling of the jihadists, left Turkey, a member of NATO, to deal with it.
President Trump had not been informed about the Votel-McGurk plan. The Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, confirmed to his men the instructions of the White House concerning the jihadists. However, Votel and McGurk are still in place.

The situation in Afrin is becoming more and more interesting. And Turkey goes for the against everyone policy, which is unreal and impossible. Soon they will show their true colors. In my opinion, generally military actions and furthermore, occupation are hard things to execute during winter, especially in an area where the population will reject turkish presence. Even Kurds are more liked in the region. I can’t wait to see how events will unfold. This could be a provocation by a NATO country towards Syria to drag more firepower in a war that can escalate and escape the boundaries of a regional conflict, as major powers (US, RU/Iran) have conflicting interests in the region. It could also be a way to disarm US influence in the area but this scenario becomes distant with every passing moment. Both US supply to Kurds and TAF operations against them come from same operational center.

In war one must be pragmatic and the Syrian government is bound by reality on the ground. However IF the Turks do succeed in occupying the Afrin Canton there can only be a few consequence’s.
In no particular order they are :- 1/ The Turks occupy and the Kurds submit peacefully to their rule. 2, The Turks occupy and the Kurds do NOT submit peacefully to their rule and wage a guerrilla war. 3/The Turks expel all the Kurds from the Afrin Canton creating another refugee crisis and this would likely be in the US illegally occupied Kurdish zone. 4/ The US is forced to directly aid the Kurds in Afrin in order to retain the loyalty of Kurds under their mandate. 5/The cost to the Turks in financial terms and political terms becomes counter productive and they return to Turkey.
There are likely other scenarios I have missed as well :) The Kurds are after all akin to a greatly loved pet dog in Western circles and can do no wrong . This is rather odd when one considers it was often the Kurds who acted for the Turks with great cruelty in the Armenian Genocide of the early 20th centure.
You also forgot the 19th century genocide committed by the Kurds.

The relationship with Turkey is only relevant to the public in terms of refugee policy.
Turkey is a friend of NATO like the others are condemnation is more a smoke screen. Countries are stopping supplying arms because Canada had taken a stance on weapons of their being used in direct violation of the laws there. Now they want to follow suit in in being able to take a moral an ethical stance.
Ethical weapons are of course so much more acceptable to NATO than the unethical weapons non aligned countries :)

Israel has always been reluctant to describe the Turkish massacre of the Armenians by the Turks in 1915 as “genocide.” It has always been believed that the reason for Israel’s reticence was not to upset Israel’s close military and diplomatic ties with Turkey. However, more evidence is being uncovered that the Armenian genocide was largely the work of the Dönmeh leadership of the Young Turks. First of all, Turkey has to take Afrin. If they focus on it no matter what, they will take it (large looses). Second, they have to keep it. They can’t afford to stay there by themselves too long so they have to rely on turkmen rebels. These rebels are cannon fodder, they are not match either for kurds either for SAA. Third, they won’t be allowed to stay there. By Iranians, by Russians, by Syrians. Conclusion, Erdo is dreaming, like always.
Is this clear for everybody ? or does anybody need more evidence about Turkey behavior ? Maybe Russia needs it, or perhaps, this is just part of Russia-Turkey agreement.
yes yes, I’m sure that the whole Russian leadership have read this article to form an opinion on the situation. Who needs intelligence services, diplomats, a foreign ministry office and satellites when they can “get evidence” on SF and such good advice from your likes.
Its very simple. Turkey knows america is planning to get assad, and that they plan to use Kurds as the reason to do it, so he cant trust the Syrians with managing kurdish ambitions, thus the’ true caliph’ erdogan is doing it himself.
Well, in long term, what will happen? In case Turkey wins, it will be diplomatically isolated, and will have to cope with permanent threat from Kurds guerilla. Moreover this potential disadvantage should allow Moscow to get quickly the upper hand.
In case Kurds win? They will face economic sanctions from all the surrounding countries and will be forced to do concessions with Syria Government.
Fact of the matter, as far as economics go, Afrin will be militarily unassailable if they win against Turks and will maybe even take the Azaz colony if that happens. Their chances are not that good in the long run, depending on how much lossess TSK is able to take.
On the other hand, there are no real internal borders within Syria and there is a mutual interdependence between the North East and the rest of Syria. Assad and kurds will work out their problems, the main sticking point will be how much control each group will have of the North East.

In order to stop the SAA the Turks would first have to defeat the Kurds. Which sofar hasn’t happened yet. Nor are there any signs the Turks and their cannonfodder are winning. Meanwhile the SAA keeps going forward and the Russians keep bombing Erdogan’s Jihadi allies.
As usual Erdogan has a big appetite, but very poor teeth. He’ll be lucky indeed if his Russian and Iranians partners (he has no allies, not even the ones he pays for) manage to nip the Kurdish ‘a state in all but name only’ in the bud for him. As he clearly seems incapable of.
They are defeating their proxies swiftly as they have captured 17 towns and villages and are on several fronts again regions scouted out are now captured or soon to be captured. The SAA can only focus on so many fronts and maintain the advance forcing Turkey to withdraw from the region. SAA are forcing the Hama pocket slowly taking one flank then the other, only way to catch the rats from bolting. Hopefully this will draw pressure from the Turks looting in Idlib and then redirect their proxies.

Assad are not worry to take control of Afrin..as in that case terrorist would be attacking SAA from Turkey…but meanwhile Assad can help Kurds vs Turks supplying weapons and transit from Raqqa Through Aleppo to Afrin!
Once all Israeli/Saudi Al Qaeda are defeated, a Syria/Russia imposed no-fly zone imposed over Afrin. Then the SAA and allies will march in and expel all foreigners from Afrin.

whatever happens, it will be much easier for syria to kick turks out of than the US. whatever happens the turkish invasion is helping the pro government forces advance so whatever the turks say, their action is helping the syrian government right now and in the future.
