Turkey is set to deliver an undisclosed number of Bayraktar TB2 combat drones to Kuwait in a deal worth $370 million, Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar announced on February 19.
Bayraktar TB2 drones saw major success in conflicts in Libya, Syria and the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh over the last few years.
“A contract worth $370 million was signed with Kuwait Defence Ministry to export Bayraktar TB2 drones,” Baykar said in a statement.
The statement did not reveal how many drones would be delivered to Kuwait or when. Each Bayraktar TB2 goes for $5m and each drone typically comes with 100 MAM-L\C precision-guided munitions, which together are worth $15m. There is also an additional cost for training as well as the command-and-control centers.
“Baykar won out in competition with significant firms from America, Europe and China, in the (bidding) process going on since 2019,” the statement said.
According to the statement, Kuwait was the country number 28 to sign a contract for the purchase of Bayraktar TB2 combat drones.
Baykar revealed that its exports totaled $1.18 billion last year. The United Arab Emirates and several African nations, including Niger, Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Mali and Somalia, were among the newest operators of the Bayraktar TB2.
Turkey has been using its growing drone industry to build new alliances and further its interests, especially in the Middle East and Africa.
Kuwait, Qatar and Oman are allies of Turkey and Iran.
