Turkey's TS1400 Helicopter Engine Experiences Critical Failure At Its Presentation (Video)

On December 5th, a presentation took place showing Turkey’s first indigenous helicopter engine – the TS1400.

Showcasing the height of Turkish engineering at the presentation that showed significant attendance, despite COVID-19, the engine rather gave a close look to everybody present at a critical failure of operation.

There is also a video of the event.

The broadcast was interrupted. The event, which was attended by Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, was broadcast live. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also followed the event.

The TS1400 is to power Turkey’s T625 multirole helicopter.

“Certification and development test flights of the Gökbey are continuing successfully. The home-grown engine has been integrated into the helicopter. We test a new feature or a new capability and the pilots quite like it,” TAI Helicopter Vice General Manager Yıldırım Kemal Yıllıkçı told Anadolu Agency (AA) on the sidelines of Turkey’s Teknofest event, held in September 2020.

Under the TLUH Program TUSAS has completed the design, development and the manufacture of an indigenous twin-engine, 5-ton class medium category (4 to 6 tons), utility helicopter with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 6,050 tons and powered by a pair of 1,400 shp class turboshaft engines.

The TS1400 Turboshaft Engine Development Project is considered to be a giant step toward achieving the company’s vision of becoming a “Globally Competitive, Original Power Systems OEM.”

The TEI TS1400 engine is expected to have similar dimensions and weight with the LHTEC CTS800-4A/4AT Turboshaft Engines, which have a reputation for compactness, light weight, reliability, power and durability. In open sources, the dry weight of the LHTEC CTS800-4A Engine (with a length of 86,4 cm and height of 72,9 cm) is stated to be 360 lbs. (163 kg).

It appears that the reliability part of that requires some more effort.

The TEI TS1400 Turboshaft Engine can also be integrated into T129 Mk-I ATAK Helicopter with some adaptations to replace LHTEC CTS800-4A Engines for which Turkey has been experiencing difficulties for several years in obtaining an export license from the U.S. Government.

With U.S. Congress adding a provision to the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act that Turkey is to be sanctioned for its purchase of a Russian S-400 missile defense system, the noose around Turkey’s military-industrial complex is tightening.

Recently, Canada stopped all of its imports of parts that are critical for Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 drones.

Austria banned all weapons exports to Turkey, and Germany as well. Other countries are likely to follow. As such Ankara needs a win in its indigenous production of engines – both helicopter and aircraft (be it UAV or even manned), so far there’s evidently limited success.

Anadolu Agency, disregarding the failure, reported that Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, speaking at the opening ceremonies of a turboshaft engine delivery facility and a design center of TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI) said that the engine would avert $60 million of imports.

Turkey is one of seven countries with gas turbine engine technology, he stressed.

“The new design center that will make indigenous engines will be the starting point of our new success stories.”

Varank said that while the per-kilogram value of Turkish exports is currently at $1.50, this figure has risen to over $50 in the defense industry.

“The export value of our first national helicopter engine TS 1400 is $6,000 per kilogram,” he added.

No mention was made that the engine apparently failed.

How do you know it failed? You did not mention your source. I don’t really feel you are impartial, you are always able to find bad news for Turkey but never a bad news for Russia. You are just another biased reported!

Sauron

The broadcast failed, and author thought the engine failed. Thats what happens when you have “an international team” running the website:)))))

Sauron

Interestingly only SF reported this, even though the broadcast was worldwide. Sounds made up to me:)

The Objective

SouthFront is not a trusted media outlet. What fits them better is gossip and biased reporting. The more I read their articles, the greater my urge to start a blog that clears some of their misunderstanding of events. I hardly learn anything new on this site. I only come here to read and comment against the lies being told. Much of what I’ve learnt about the middle east comes from other sources. some from free blogger and wordpress blogs. SF lacks intelligent writers. What they do mostly is report old news. They never analyse events in a balanced fashion, thus keeping their readers in the dark. Most fans of SF don’t know the real games going on in the Middle East.

Lone Ranger

Gas turbines and jet engine designes and manufacturing need state of the art design and manufacturing, even China is struggling with it. Russia, U.S., UK, Italy, Germany, France are leading, with Russia and the U.S. being at the top.

FlorianGeyer

The visitors were NOT social distancing at all and the Turkish officials were fortunately wearing masks that hid their ‘red faces’ of embarrassment.

Its a win win for Turkish hubris :)

Google basically is as of now paying an awesome charge of 179/hour and most significant thing is each week payout….(o7106)…. Ice Icegold

You forgot Sweden

Lone Ranger

In the past yeah, nowdays they using license built GE stuff.

SnowCatzor

Normally I’d laugh at anything that makes Erdogan and his military look bad, but to be fair it is still a prototype so I’ll cut them some slack. I don’t think Turkey will ever be anybody’s first choice for military hardware, but guess they do need more indigenous technology if they’re going to get sanctioned by all of their ‘NATO allies’.

Kohlhaas

Ah hello again :) Why did you run away without providing an argument last time?

HiaNd

Engine is Soviet know how from Ukraine.

FlorianGeyer

” it is still a prototype so I’ll cut them some slack ”

The chief engineer will be worried that his head will be cut off :)

Ice Icegold

??

swedish_viking

Now that the core design is ready after some delays, the original development for the core design started 2012 with a 3yrs development plan and TEI and SSB signed a 2yrs plan for core design in early 2017. They are now entering the 4.5yrs prototype stage and after that it’s the 1.5yrs certification stage according to the 8yrs developing contract between TEI and SSB. It might be ready for usage in 2025-2026 if everything goes according to plan, an 8yrs plan may be deemed to short but they actually started development 2012 and the 8yrs contract is from 2017.

Servet Köseoğlu

,t will be ready for usage in 2024…qalification and sertification supposed to be done these years..

swedish_viking

The certification won’t be done by 2024 according to contract and plans. The certification can only be done after the product it self is “finished” and the certification process takes time.

Servet Köseoğlu

correct..it writes 2026 in turkish media..

Kohlhaas

A friendly warning to SF. Consider replacing the position of the guy who wrote this “article”.

The title says “FAILURE AT ITS PRESENTATION” okay, then, we read the article, we encounter with words “failed”, “disregarding the failure”, “failure”, “failed” and so on. Just tell me how the f. is it failed?? Is it so hard to explain or point out the reason for alleged failure? As a reader, I want to know how the motor has failed and how did you guys understand that? If you don’t know that either, then, change your title. Reading this article made me feel as if I watched a clickbait video on youtube.

About the video, is that supposed to be a proof of failure? Let me do that job, which your team did not, and translate what happened in the video. Broadcast of the test crew interrupted suddenly and someone among the crowd asks “is it failed?” and another person from the crowd replies “yes it is failed” then the man on the stage says “no it is working, they are trying to sabotage the event” and then he scolds someone (probably the representative of the company that provides the broadcast) and says “get the broadcast back.

I also did your job and searched for another or longer video of the event. https://mobile.twitter.com/varank/status/1335267437177139201 Here you go, apparently, after this incident, they personally went to the test room and Hulusi Akar himself starts and shuts the engine.

The point is, the engine may fail or not. Just do your job better! Your site turning to another western media that doing its job sloppy.

mhtsaropinigitakis

wellcome this is “the news”.. what cave were u in so many centuries?

Kohlhaas

I was there, just came out :) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karain_Cave

Having been dissatisfied with this, I am going back now haha

JIMI JAMES

These days you can see news from the cave too, just ask democratic/isis teorrist!

gypsygreek

Here is the full video The engine is working https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T44DlbMm37U

Kohlhaas

Thanks. But SF needs to see this more than I do lol

The Objective

That’s correct.

Ice Icegold

Turkogyftos

Shlomo Shekelstein

Best video ever! 24 minutes of Erdogan and 15 seconds of engine ?

John

Well done, thank you.

tzatz

Rationalization is ALL you got … admit failure and fix it … lol

next

Kohlhaas

I am not the one should admit a failure or fix something and that’s not even the point, but I am quite sure you got the point already…

Ice Icegold

You will realise the failure when you se the Turkish helicopters start falling down from the sky.

Kohlhaas

Oh you seem like an expert. Maybe you can explain why the motor has failed.

HiaNd

Chopper engines doesn’t come out of blue. Turkey has ZERO experience and know how in building those engines. That engine could have been built only in “cooperation” with the country that has experience in building those engines. That country is BANKRUPTED Ukraine (and know how is Soviet know-how based design in this case). The same goes for Turk new anti ship missile (with the transfer of Soviet know how from Ukraine). China did take everything they could from Ukraine and now Turkey does the same.

JIMI JAMES

Who this enviromental exempt clown thinks it is mocking gas turbine powerplants, heres the deal, where is your proof? Why don’t you admit even the best designs on earth have their share of hiccups initially, angle lie to rely on cia contracts? My moneys gimps got no clue about success!

You don’t have to be an avert Turkish supporter, but gee usa used to build succesfull turbine powered cars in the 60s, think there be some respect for fundamentally superior powerplants:

John

lol

The Objective

Sometimes the SF team is openly biased, so I don’t even have interest in articles like this. I couldn’t even muster the patience to read it. It’s so childish you know. They turn what is supposed to be an intelligence website to something like childplay. Even if you are biased, why do it so openly. You lack what to write about? Maybe I should suggest a few topics that’ll add to our understanding of the middle east instead of turning this to a defense gossip site. We know you hate Turkey, but look for better reasons to criticize their engineers.

Arman Melkonyan

Turk, Give us a better reason to criticize than an engine that fails to work. Also, explain why it’s “childish” to report facts that Turks don’t like and wish to hide.

The Objective

Thank God I’m talking to one of the team members at SouthFront.

I want to ask you one question to illustrate the criticism I labelled at you guys. Take this “failed-engine article” as an example. Let’s assume that the engine actually failed. How does it enrich my knowledge of geopolitics to know that an engine failed to work in Turkey? You see why I call your writers unintelligent? I gain absolutely nothing in terms of knowledge from wasting 5 – 10 minutes reading that crap. Do you know how many failed Russian weapons tests took place since SouthFront was established? How many have you reported in such detail? And you want to be credited with objectivity?

A slight problem can cause an engine failure. I doubt any engineer would want to publicly demonstrate a machine that he knows will fail to work, especially on something that’s a national pride. Again, because the engine fails today doesn’t mean it’ll fail tomorrow. It also does not translate to backwardness. In fact, it’s progress, as every human invention was perfected through trial and error. Even Russian engineers do fail, but they keep trying until everything works. That’s why Russia’s defense projects take years to mature.

It’s not like I don’t want to read any negative articles about Turkey. I’m not that type. I want to know the whole truth even though I pick a side. Take a look at this article by “Responsible Statecraft”. I’ll post the link below. The author certainly is against Turkey, but the article makes a lot of sense and teaches new things or at least provides a different perspective to events about Turkey that I find very interesting to read and think about. The author certainly knows what he’s talking about even if I don’t agree with his views 100%. Despite being obviously anti-Turkish, his approach is a more balanced one than anything I’ve read on SouthFront regarding Turkey. That makes me more likely to agree with him even though I’m a supporter of Turkey. Here is the link to the article: https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2020/12/04/is-turkey-out-of-control/

There is JUST one thing you guys at SouthFront are good at: Reporting the Syrian war events, for example: 3 ISIS members were killed today, Russia launches air strikes in Idlib, Turkey establishes new observation post, 2 regime forces killed in ISIS ambush, US convoy hit by IED, etc. Apart from that, all other things on SF is mere cheer-leading and nonsense. I don’t waste my time reading those long amateurish and biased analysis your writers sometimes trot out.

You can make SouthFront more interesting by presenting things from a balanced viewpoint even if you pick a side. There is nothing wrong with picking a side or even stating it in the article. But as you claim to report facts and balanced analysis, you guys must research deeper and produce more credible information for the SF community, even when it’s bitter for Russian or Iranian supporters. I read a comment where someone challenged the author to explain the cause of the engine failure. Obviously, the writer didn’t do his research well.

And mind you, it’s not only Turks that support Turkey. Most Sunni Muslims do. I’m saying this because you called me a Turk.

Shlomo Shekelstein

Yeah, he is a team member and I am Mark Zuckerberg. Jens Holms is actually Joe Biden’s aunt…. and you are totally not a braindead, completely delusional raving idiot, nor you spam worthless garbage that no one ever reads…

The Objective

People do read my long posts you call spam even though most hate it cos I don’t shy from the truth. I get a lot of replies to my comments. Unlike your idiot kind out here, I only discus geopolitics and not gossip about some engine failure. My last comment was not intended for morons like you. I was replying to a comment from one of the SF teams addressing me. I’v had lengthy conversation with people on SF far more reasonable than you even though we supported opposing sites.

Shlomo Shekelstein

The Moron, you don’t even know what truth means you pretentious, utterly pathetic retard full of crap. Literally every dumb word you spawn here is a total nonsense. You’re Jens Holms 2.0, a brainless monkey trying to impress someone with endless incredibly boring and equally worthless bullshit, yet most people just laugh at you; some probably pity you, after all – autism and mental retardation is not for laughing… poor little monkey.

“I was replying to a comment from one of the SF teams addressing me.” No really, you are stupid beyond belief. Arman is not a member of SF team, you braindead imbecile. LOL Sorry I just have to laugh at you now: HAHAHAHAHA! “SF team member” ??

Arman Melkonyan

Muslim, Turk,

1) Let me enrich your knowledge of geopolitics by stating first that what you call Turkey today was created through the rape, torture and genocide of millions of Christian Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians. In other words, no human being could call himself a Turk.

2) Russians or anyone else of import, have actually produced engines that *work,* besides failed prototypes or outright lies — the latter of which appears to be the case with the Turks: you cannot make sophisticated helicopter turbine engines if you’re incapable of producing simple piston engines for fixed-wing drones that only fly at 200kph. You Turks haven’t produced a single engine that works either for your helicopters or your infamous Altay tank. You just keep upping the ante with evermore dubious claims like it’s going to take an additional five (5) years to certify an engine that you certify that it already works? You Turks ought to stick to the only thing you do best like chopping human beings’ heads off.

3) We are not here to educate nor entertain the intractable Turk nor their Sunni Muslim Pakistani allies nor the Turks’ Qatari masters to whom your Reis Erdogan gave away Turkey’s most valuable lands and strategic assets (Tank Palet Fabrikasi) in exchange for the Americans’ green dollars which you Turks love and cherish over and above your own Turkish Liras.

If you don’t like SF, you don’t have to read it.

Iyi gunler.

The Objective

I was expecting a reasonable answer to my question. But you spewed more garbage with a silly talk of rape, genocide, etc. —- events that even if they happened took place several generations ago. Is that the only thing you can tell me? Is that your idea of modern geopolitics. If you are one of the contributing writers at SF, then the situation is even worse than I though.

It’s really good that you are being honest about your mission, which you clearly stated is not meant to “educate” us. Then what is it meant to do?

You can call me whatever you want, Turk, ISIS, Saudi, CIA, or anything that pleases you. But provided you aren’t capable of making any logical arguments, you can only be taken seriously by the Shiite and Russian trolls on SF.

I come to SF “only” to counter the lies by both writers and commenters. Lies that are intended to blind readers to the REAL calculus of events in the region. Every move in the Middle East is highly calculated due to the volatile nature of that region. If all you can tell me is what happened in Turkey decades and centuries ago, then you shouldn’t blame me for criticizing you.

Your real anger at Turkey is that it wouldn’t let Russia do as it pleases with the Muslims of Syria. You want to re-impose a dictator over Syrians, but that project will not succeed. You’re up against far too many adversaries to win. Forget the fact that Assad controls a larger part of Syria. Syria is still a battlefield. And it is a blessing that the U.S invaded Syria. You’ll be contending with a much more powerful super-power and they’ll cause a lot of pain for the Russian economy.

Now let me give you a small summary of Middle Eastern events:

The U.S dollar is pegged to oil through the petrodollar, and America must control the flow of oil to torpedo any move away from the dollar. To do this, the U.S uses puppet Middle Eastern regimes the British and Europe imposed on the region to make sure that oil sells only in dollar. In return, the U.S protects these regimes from threats foreign and domestic.

Israel is America’s eyes and ears in the middle east. Israel wants to expand its territory and take over the whole of Palestine. It is doing it gradually and the U.S turns a blind eye due to Israel’s strategic importance for America. Europe also supports Israel, just like most Christians, due to their enmity with Islam, and because most believe that God gave Israel to the Jews.

The Mullahs of Iran want to bring Islam’s holy sites under their control. They know that they’ll face stiff resistance from America, the Sunnis, Israel, and Europe. They believe that Sunnis are misguided and need to accept the Shiite creed. If they can take control of Islam’s holy sites, they stand a good chance of controlling the Muslim world and converting a large number of Sunnis. So they prepared a region-wide army for what they know will end in a war. They have now largely surrounded ALL the holy sites of Islam: Mecca, Madina, and Jerusalem. They’ll take advantage of any situation that brings them towards this goal, for example, the war in Yemen.

Turkey wants to regain it independence and also to form some kind of a Muslim alliance against the threat Muslims face. Russia obviously doesn’t like that a Muslim empire should form so close to it. Hence, Russia’s support for Shiites and hypocrites like El-Sisi, Assad, MBZ, MBS, Haftar, etc. Russia doesn’t want to see a united Muslim front emerge.

America and Israel are more focused on Iran as Russia and Turkey appear to balance each other out in the Middle East. America shares Russia’s interest of preventing a united Sunni front led by Turkey. But America is also suspicious of Russia’s intent. Thus, the U.S is content with letting Russia oppress the Sunnis wherever it can, provided Russia does not take over America’s hypocrites like Haftar, El-Sisi etc. In other words, the U.S is willing to let Russia frustrate Turkey but not gain too much influence at America’s expense.

America’s major problem today is Iran, largely because Iran threatens the very existence of U.S client regimes in the Middle East, including Israel. Iran’s biggest problem today is America. U.S forces are the only obstacle between Iran and its ultimate goal of taking Mecca and Madinah.

U.S and Israeli leaders unanimously agree that a war with Iran would be very costly. These leaders have divided in two camps. One camp favors war despite its cost, because they have concluded it to be the only way to stop Iran (and they are right: Only war will stop Iran’s constant drive towards the Hejaz). The other camp of U.S and Israeli leaders believe that Iran could be persuaded to abandon this goal (they are very wrong. Iran will not stop even after it takes the three holy sites of Islam). However, Iran doesn’t want a war because it knows the damage America can inflict. Iran’s moves clearly shows it want to win without fighting. Like gradually taking over as many Muslim countries as it could (through proxies) and forming a united front. Then a civil war in Saudi Arabia that gives Iran and its proxies the chance to covertly invade.

I’m pretty sure you Russians aren’t aware of this Iranian intent. Only the Shiites know what I’m talking about here. There are a lot more I can tell you about the Middle East and this is just an example. That’s why I call your articles unintelligent. The only analysis I enjoy reading on SF are guest opinion posts from the Saker and other analysts.

Arman Melkonyan

The fallacies of your claims are found within your own statements.

If Russia is truly an enemy of the United States whose power derives from the petrodollar, then WHY is Putin still selling Russian oil for American dollars? Just like the USSR sold Russian oil for American dollars at the height of the Cold War? Don’t give me, The Russians are selling oil and gas only for Euros nonsense. They aren’t. Russia probably sells more of its natural resources for dollars than anything else. Putin *did not* nationalize the Russian central bank which is controlled by the City of London to this very day: https://anonhq.com/checkmate-central-bank-russia/

From the Russian Pravda itself: http://www.pravdareport.com/russia/129431-usa_russia_central_bank/

Moral of the story? The same Jewish, Bolshevik, Freemasonic powerful bankers control both the US and Russia: http://aanirfan.blogspot.com/2018/02/trump-putin-kosher-nostra.html?m=1

Second,

If Russia is truly wary of a Turkish-led Muslim Empire then why is Putin helping Erdogan and the Turks? Putin just gave away the gates of the Silk Road all the way to China on a silver platter to the Turks and the Azeris by giving them the right of passage through Armenia proper. If what you said was true, then Putin is a traitor for allowing Turkey and Azerbaijan to link through Nakhichevan and Armenia, without the Turks firing a single bullet in anger.

Why?

Because Erdogan is part of the Frankist Zionist team, just like Putin. (Look up that word, Frankism. It’s what’s behind everything.)

Here’s where Erdogan and the Turks are coming from: http://themillenniumreport.com/2015/11/ultra-secret-conspiracy-in-the-middle-east-revealed-the-donmeh-the-wahhabi-and-zionisms-sephardic-jewry/

As for your penchance for lesser facts: how can Turkey which is incapable of producing the 100-horsepower piston engine powering the Bayraktar drone purchased from an Austrian source, expect to make a 1400-horsepower turboshaft helicopter engine? That requires much greater know-how and much more sophisticated machine tooling to make it.

Take care.

The Objective

Russia has declared the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist and persuaded its CSTO members to do the same. Note that even the U.S has not declared the MB terrorist because they say Muslim Brotherhood does not satisfy the conditions to be labelled terrorists by U.S law. I’m telling you this because you claim that Russia is helping Turkey. Turkey is the unofficial leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. The MB has never conducted any terrorist attack against Russia or a Russian ally. If there is, I challenge you to produce evidence from a reliable source. Secondly, the NK war to which you made reference is clearly a wrong example. Russia never wanted an Azerbaijani takeover of NK despite officially admitting it to be Azerbaijani territory. The reason Russia didn’t intervene earlier was due to its friction with Armenia. But when Armenia appeared certain to lose, Russia quickly stepped in with some bogus claim of peacekeeping. A peacekeeping mission that was not authorized by the UN and was forced on the Azerbaijanis. Thus, Russia prevented the fall of NK to Azerbaijan. Is that your idea of helping Turkey? Again, why is Russia supporting Turkey’s staunchest enemies? U.A.E, El-sisi, Haftar are all sworn enemies of Turkey, but they are Russia’s buddies. Like usual, you argument doesn’t stand up to factual events. Common sense should tell you that there can not be any form of alliance between Russia and Sunnis — certainly not with the current behavior of Russia.

Arman Melkonyan

How do you explain Russia carving up a connecting roadway between Nakhichevan and Azerbaijan? Why did the Russians do that if they could just stop the war anytime they wanted and impose their conditions on all parties involved? FYI, there is a PKK office in Moscow I believe. How conflicted and stupid Russians can be? Russians also refused to deliver the purely *defensive* S-300 systems to Iran even though the Iranians had already paid for them. Russians are not to be trusted first and foremost because their actions do not make sense even from the perspective of their own Russian national interests. So what are you? Some nominally Shia/Iranian apologist for the Zionist Russian regime?

Arman Melkonyan

The Turks can’t even make the small propeller engines for their fixed-wing drones that fly at 200kph and they are claiming to be able to produce engines for helicopters?

As can be seen in the video, the Turks are so desperate and uptight that they are openly accusing each other of treason when things go wrong.

We watch together as the Turks start facing consequences.

Kohlhaas

Not “as can bee seen in the video” as can be seen from my translation you mean….or somehow you can magically understand turkish. Downvote me and use the content I gave… what a clown.

Arman Melkonyan

Translated-into-English versions of this piece of news, along with commentary and articles in English are available. I believe I read a detailed account of the incident on the English version of the AHVAL NEWS website. Lots of insightful opinion pieces on Turkey.

Not exactly for your information.

Kohlhaas

https://ahvalnews.com/news As I can see, there is no such a news in this site.

Links or did not happen :)

Sorry, you are one of the least trustable ones in this site.

Arman Melkonyan

Google translate any of the articles below into English. Claims of sabotage and even treason are being voiced and/or implied, directed to people in Erdogan’s entourage close to the President himself. (Perhaps I read about it initially in the comments section of one blog, video or another, I don’t remember.) You probably speak Turkish so why are you being coy about it anyway?

http://www.yenigaste.com/m/gundem/milli-helikopter-motoru-toreninde-sabotaj-krizi-h59551.html

It’s being discussed in the Turkish Majlis even, apparently: https://www.eskisehir.net/m/eskisehir/teideki-motor-teslim-torenindeki-sabotaj-iddialari-meclis-gundeminde-h40394.html
