On March 22, the Turkish Army and its proxies from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) captured the villages of Baay, Basufan, Kafr Nabu and Burj Haydar south of the city of Afrin, according to sources linked to the FSA.

The sources reported that the Turkish Army artillery had shelled several positions of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the southern part of the Afrin area and even in the SAA-held areas north of the city of Aleppo.
Meanwhile, the YPG press announced that YPG fighters had killed ten members of the Turkish-backed FSA around the city of Afrin in a hit and run attack. Two vehicles of the FSA were also destroyed.
Furthermore, YPG fighters conducted a second hit and run attack against the Turkish Army and its proxies in the district of Shara north of Afrin city. Eight fighters of the Turkish-backed FSA were killed and three others were injured in the attack, according to the Kurdish Hawar News Agency (ANHA).
Currently, the Turkish Army is advancing to separate the remaining YPG-held areas south of Afrin from Idlib governorate. Later, the Turkish Army might launch an attack to capture the city of Tell Rifaat east of Afrin, according to Turkish sources.

I am still puzzled to understand what’s the agenda here. Clearly Assad and the Russians allow them to advance but to what extent this will go on for? surely Assand doesn’t want these Turkish lads on Aleppo City’s gates? where does this stop ?
Two things: Firstly, Syria doesn’t have the military means to confront the Turkish army (one of the biggest in NATO); Russia doesn’t have the will, since that would mean direct confrontation with NATO. Secondly, al-Asad wants to see the Rojava project destroyed, so northern Syria would be easier to re-integrate into a new (old) centralised Syria. Mostly though, there are no resources to oppose the Turkish invasion. Of course, being left alone by both the Syrian regime and Russia will likely make Kurds and the other inhabitants of Northern Syria look for other allies. In general though, the big players, like Russia, Turkey and Iran all have a ‘Kurdish problem’ and the only way they know to deal with it is suppression – unfortunately. Sadly, there are no enlightened rulers in sight.
What surprises me is that there at has been little activity on the long Kurd/Turk border in eastern Syria, I haven’t seen any news articles about it anyway. A series of Kurdish cross border raids in that area could have distracted Turkish forces away from Afrin, but instead the Kurds appear to be leaving each other out to dry just as much as anyone else.
