On March 9, the Turkish Army and its proxies from the Free Syrian Army continued their advance towards the city of Afrin and captured the key towns of Maryamayn and Inab, 6km east of the city, according to sources linked to the FSA. Currently, only one village, Qibar, is separating the Turkish Army from Afrin.
Earlier, the Turkish Army advanced in the districts of Shara and Bulbul north of Afrin and captured the villages of Sir’ayn and Kafr Mize along with Kachkadar Mount.
Meanwhile, Turkish sources reported that the pro-government National Defense Forces (NDF) had deployed more units to its positions in the Afrin area to support the Kurdish People’s Protections Units (YPG). However, these claims have not been confirmed yet by any Syrian pro-government sources.

The Turkish Army will likely expand its control east, southeast and south of Afrin in the upcoming days in order to isolate the strategic city before storming it. On the other hand, the YPG appears to be incapable of launching any singificant counter-attack right now, even despite the recent reinforcements from the NDF and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Where is the “mighty” Russian military deployed in Syria supposedly to restore order in that country? Turkey is indeed occupying significant chunks of territories in northern Syria and they won’t withdraw anytime soon (an occupation that may last years). Putin strategy in that Arab country is a total failure and the federalization of the Syrian Arab Republic is fait accompli…realities that are difficult to swallow by Southfront’s Putin cheerleaders & russophiles.
It’s the opposite. Erdogan stopped the federalization of Syria.
Would it have been any different with American bases there? I’m just waiting to see what will transpire when the two NATO forces clash, because right now The Turks are making the Americans look really impotent.

I think the only conclusion to be drawn from all this is that the Kurds are a race of retards. They had a golden opportunity to turn Afrin & surrounds over to the Syrian government, which would have avoided this mess. Just whom those retards thought would come to their aid eludes me. Very well said. They still have their chance (thought their bargaining position weakens with each and every day) but instead they send reinforcements from Western Bank. I would not go as far as calling them retards but every nation deserves its leaders. Kurdish leaders lead their population into nowhere land (same as it happened when they were killing Armenians on behalf of Turks) – US/Israel bribery is working wonders.
As someone who lived in Yugoslavia during all the phases of its disintegration, witnessing wars in Slovenia (1991), Croatia (1991-95), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-95) and Kosovo (1998-99), I think that I can recognize what is going on behind the scene, as some of the same actors are distributing the cards this time too. I think that the current war in Afrin is agreed between Turks, Russians and Americans, while Syrian government is not in position to resist very much, so it is trying to get what it can. The ethnic map of Syria is being change, just as the Ethnic map of Bosnia was changed, so that the country can be politically recomposed, to consist of 3 entities. Kurds are going to lose Afrin, potentially maybe even Manbij, but they will keep territories east of Euphrates. Pro Turkish militias will keep these territories to colonize their refugees, after Syrian Army liberates southern Idlib to get control over the M-5 highway (connecting Hamma with Aleppo), Syrian Army already got full control over the Aleppo city, without fighting. The SAA is going to cleanall the green and grey pockets within the red territory that it controls at the moment. Then it remains to see what will be negotiated about Al Tanf, Al Tabqa and main oil fields across the Euphrates. I suppose there will be some trade about them too.

It does leave open what will happen to the Israeli supported Jihadis in southern Syria, as I doubt Israel wants the Syrian state to reassert itself there.
