Early on May 7, two soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were killed and two others were wounded when the Turkish military shelled a position they were manning near the town of al-Zijara in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
Al-Zijara is located in the southern part of Afrin area, within a strip of land jointly controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the SAA.
A few hours after the deadly artillery strikes, the Turkish military and its proxies shelled the towns of Nayrabia, Ziwan, Tell Jigan, and Tell Madiq in the northern countryside of Aleppo. The four towns are also jointly held by the SDF and the SAA.
The artillery strikes on al-Zijara were the most recent in a series of Turkish attacks on SAA troops deployed in SDF-held areas in northern and northeastern Syria.
On March 23, two SAA soldiers were wounded when Turkish artillery strikes hit a position they were manning near the SDF-held town Ibbin in the northern countryside in Aleppo. On April 24, a Turkish combat drone targeted an SAA position near the SDF-held town of Kobane in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo. A battle tank was allegedly destroyed in the strike. On April 27, three soldiers were wounded when the Turkish military and its proxies pounded the outskirts of the SDF-held town of Tell Tamer in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah.
The SAA and its allies will likely respond to the deadly artillery strikes on al-Zijara, as they responded to all previous Turkish attacks.
Turkey is apparently trying to pressure the Damascus government into withdrawing its forces from SDF-held areas in northern and northeastern Syria. Ankara is likely planning to launch a new ground operation against the SDF in these regions.
