Turkey has been attempting to deploy radars in Syria for weeks, the Jerusalem Post reported on December 25, citing two Western intelligence sources.
One of the sources told the Post that Turkey is planning to transfer the radar systems to the Syrian military. The sources noted, however, that Turkish personnel would remain responsible for operating the systems, giving Ankara access to and control over the intelligence gathered.
Following the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, Turkey emerged as the main ally of Syria’s Interim Government that was formed by Islamist rebels it backed for years.
Ankara is now reportedly playing a leading role in the rebuilding of the country’s military which lost nearly all of its advanced offensive and defensive capabilities as a result of an Israeli primitive attack that took place after the collapse of the Assad regime last year.
The attack, codenamed “Operation Arrow of Bashan,” wiped out the country’s entire earlier warning and air defense network.
In October, a Bloomberg report revealed Turkish plans to arm the Syrian military with advanced weapons, including air defense systems.
The weapons will be deployed in northern Syria to avoid any tensions with Israel in the south, according to the report, which noted that this plan is part of broader understandings with the Interim Government to support efforts to rebuild the Syrian military.
Turkey already has an extensive air defense network in northern Syria, built all the way back in 2020 following a deadly confrontation with the Assad regime.
Jerusalem Post’s latest report suggests that Ankara is now working to expand this network deeper into the country, under the guise of equipping the Syrian military.
Earlier this year, Israel attacked multiple bases in central and western Syria as a part of efforts to bar Turkey from establishing a military presence outside the northern region of the war-torn country.
The Jerusalem Post noted in its report that the deployment of Turkish radars would significantly restrict Israel’s freedom of action in Syrian airspace, and would even complicate any future attack on Iran.
Interestingly, the Turkish plan to deploy radars in Syria was revealed amid reports of progress in talks between Israel and Syria, which stagnated for months.
Talks on a security agreement between the two sides saw significant progress in recent weeks, a Syrian source close to President Ahmad al-Sharaa told i24News, attributing the breakthrough to efforts made by United States President Donald Trump.
It is possible that the agreement, which will include a diplomatic annex, will be signed during a high-level Syrian-Israeli meeting in a European country in the near future.
The source didn’t even rule out the possibility of a direct signing at a meeting between Sharaa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Taking into account Turkey’s attempts to expand its military presence in Syria, i24News optimistic report is highly questionable. The deployment of radars in Syria will certainly trigger Israel, which will likely attempt to take them out overtly, or covertly. This makes a security agreement less likely.
While Sharaa appears to be very enthusiastic about a security agreement with Israel and willing to make unimaginable concessions to reach it, he is in no position to refuse military cooperation with Turkey.
A security agreement will not likely be reached without a solution for the clash of interests between Israel and Turkey in Syria.
