A commander in the Turkish-backed group Jaysh al-Ahrar was killed and another was injured in two separate attacks in the northern Syrian governorate of Idlib on June 27 and 28.
Enab Baladi, a pro-opposition outlet, said that a commander of the group, known by his nom de guerre Abu Omar, was killed when an improvised-explosive device (IED) blew up his car in the town of Taftanaz in eastern Idlib.
A second IED attack in the town of Zardana in northern Idlib targeted Abu Ali, also a commander in the ranks of Jaysh al-Ahrar. Unlike Abu Omar, he survived the attack.
Mustafa Salmu, a spokesman for Jaysh al-Ahrar, confirmed that the attacks were coordinated and told Enab Baladi: “one of the attacks occurred yesterday, while the second took place in today’s morning”.
Jaysh al-Ahrar is a member in the so-called National Front for Liberation (NFL). The anti-government armed coalition was formed last year with direct support from Turkey.
Some opposition activists said that ISIS cells were behind the attacks on Jaysh al-Ahrar commanders, while others held the Syrian intelligence, or even Kurdish forces responsible.
