On January 31, the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) claimed that its fighters had captured a man-portable air-defense system (MANPAD) from Kurdish YPG/YJP forces in the Syrian area of Afrin. The FSA released a video that shows the MANPAD allegedly captured from Kurdish forces.
The MANPAD shown in the video is a Russian-made Igla (SA-18 Grouse) missile. The similar missile was used by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) to down a Turkish Cobra attack helicopter in May 2016.
Earlier in January, media reports appeared that the US provided some MANPADs to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) operating in northern Syria. Then, these reports were not confirmed by any evidence.
The YPG/YPJ is the core of the SDF. Ankara says that this group is a local branch of the PKK and describes it as a terrorist organization.
Looks dangerous.
If Kurds had manpads they would shot down those pesky turkish choppers…
It would ino depend on how many they have and what are the chances for a successfull hit. No use targeting a plane at 15.000 ft.
IR guided mostly. Bad business for them in open terrain.
Agree
PKK Kurds have used them against Turkish helicopters in last decade – inside of Turkey itself.
I would like to hear of some downed aircraft if this is what they have
*Helicopters | MANPADs can’t take down jets or armed UAVs.
Fairly easy (taking down jets) if it’s flying below 3.5-4km.
Now what country would provide manpads to Kurds anxious to overthrow the government of Syria? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
One can also ask what country does not want the turks enter Afrin without as much as possible lossess as can be inflicted?
Israel!
Now which country has been busy buying / collecting weapons from former USSR territories for dispersion to terrorists doing it’s bidding in the Middle East? This is not to say that they don’t provide more modern US made weaponry as well.
You forgot the US , UK , Germany ,France and the Dutch in supplying these eapons.
Actually, I had the US in mind in the ‘collecting weapons’ part of my statement, but you’re correct at the involvement of the others you mention.
Hopefully Turkey will scout more positions and give the SAA more ways to shut down Turkey attempts to help their proxies..
Wasn’t US manpads but the Russian manpads those are from Turkey and they are more for display to Russian and Syrian Air Forces, open ended threat from Turkey again.
Interesting…. I guess I’ll have to wait and see. Of course I wasn’t saying they were US manufactured manpads. The US is known to have collected weapons from former USSR countries for dispersion and use in it’s foreign wars against other states.
The SAA is taking all the positions that Turkey scouted and have to now finish securing the railroad as HTS withdrew from the villages in the swamp east and west wasitah. Hopefully they will cut the the M5 supply route and bisect the terrorists in Idlib.
Amazing what a little patience can do! Keen observation indeed……
Exactly, SDF and Iraqi weapons/ammo are continuously replenished from stocks in Bulgaria and Croatia bought by US and airlift into Iraq
USA
Al qaeda now has weapons that can take down air liners on take off and landing, thanks kurds. Sell your delta stock folks.
Al qaeda had plenty of ‘those weapons’ right after the US/UK/France killed Gaddafi and turned Libya into another Saudi Wahhabi shithole. Thank us/them, not the Kurds. (You’re welcome!)
And why would the Turks not supply all the MANPADS that their FSA head-choppers want? The purpose of the TFSA isn’t to fight Kurds, it’s to fight the Syrian government.
Exactly right – and this remains the strategy – the FSA is however better equipped. trained, organized than before, plus drawing on mercenary manpower Syrian refugees and this Op has been planned in detail for at least two years.
If the Kurds have manpads the surly would have used them already
They have quite a few of them but use them sparingly.
Russian manpads not US manpads as those we here see are manufactured in Turkey can tell by the design.
There is zero evidence that Turkey manufactures the Igla (SA-18 Grouse) – typical Woolpuller crap.
Captured from the YPG? Whatever. The USA has a long history of supplying manpads when their assets get too much CAS attention. Think Afghanistan in the 80s

I must 100% agree with you on that, it doesn’t matter who it is! These people find some type of way to Slither their stuff around and the stuff they’re showing off on the video looks brand new. Also turkey is part of NATO so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out
Turkish lies. That’s their manpads imo.If we really didn’t want Turkey to attack Afrin. Well then they would not be attacking.
Like if we wanted to stop Turkey in Afrin. Anti tank missile way more effective on this battlefield. We need Turkey tho. Like they have the geographic version on a vagina.Aka the gates to black sea !
