On September 11, a Turkish combat drone targeted a vehicle of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) near the town of Bara in Sinjar district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
In a statement, the Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism said that the drone strike claimed the lives of two members of the PKK and wounded another. One of the two killed in the strike was reportedly a senior commander of the Kurdish guerilla group. This is yet to be confirmed.
The Turkish military has been conducting an operation against the PKK in northern Iraq since mid-April. The operation, codenamed Claw-Lock, is meant to neutralize the group’s remaining cells in the areas of Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan in the Kurdistan Region.
Ankara claims that its military has killed, wounded or captured around 300 members of the PKK since the beginning of Operation Claw-Lock.
The operation came at a high cost, however. So far, 51 service members of the Turkish military, including several officers, have been confirmed to be killed by the PKK.
The new drone strike on Sinjar could provoke a response from the PKK, or even pro-Iranian factions in Iraq. Tehran allies have been growing frustrated with Turkey’s never-ending military operations in their country. The factions attacked Turkish bases in the Kurdistan Region with rockets and drones on several occasions in the last few months.
