On March 1, two personnel of the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS), a Yazidi armed faction affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), were killed in a Turkish drone strike on Iraq’s northern region.

The deadly drone strike was carried out in the district of Sinjar, one of the few heartlands of the non-Muslim Yazidi minority in Iraq.

“A Turkish combat drone targeted a car carrying a security official and his bodyguard” in the town of Sinjar, killing both, the counter-terrorism services of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region said in a statement.

The YBS security official was identified as Sherzad Qayyeri. The exact nature of his work with the faction and his relations with the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist group by Turkey, remain unknown.

This was the second Turkish drone strike to hit Sinjar this week. On February 27, a strike left three local fighters dead in their car in the district.

The Turkish military has been conducting a large-scale operation against the PKK and its affiliates in northern Iraq since last April. The operation, codenamed Claw-Lock, is meant to neutralize the remaining cells of the guerilla group in the areas of Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan in Kurdistan.

Operation Claw-Lock inflicted some heavy losses on the PKK. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense claims that hundreds of Kurdish fighters were killed, wounded or captured. However, the group is still launching attacks from northern Iraq.
