On December 3, heavy clashes broke out between Turkish forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern countryside of Raqqa.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Turkish-backed militants launched an attack at several positions of the SDF near the village of Saida which is located to the west of the town of Ain Issa, along the strategic M4 highway.
The attack coincided with heavy Turkish shelling on the outskirts of Saida and several positions on the M4 highway. No casualties have been reported, yet.
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Russian Military Police, who maintain a network of positions in the region, didn’t intervene.
The Turkish attack on Saida appears to be limited. Turkish forces may have launched the attack in order to test the SDF’s defenses in the region.
According to several recent reports, the Turkish military and its proxies have been preparing to launch a large-scale operation against the SDF in different parts of northern and northeastern Syria. Ain Issa is allegedly among the targets of the operation.
