On November 26, the Turkish military and its proxies carried out a series of artillery and rocket strikes on positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the northwestern Aleppo countryside.
The strikes targeted the villages Zour Maghar, Zurafa, Bayadi, Ziyarah, Jarqali. The five villages are located to the west of the town of Kobane, a well-known stronghold of the SDF. The SAA has been deployed in the outskirts of the town since 2019.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syrian service member was wounded as a result of the Turkish strikes.
In the morning, the SAA deployed large reinforcements in the western outskirts of Kobane. The reinforcements included more than 20 battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, truck-mounted heavy machine guns and howitzers.
The Turkish artillery and rocket strikes were likely carried out in the framework of Operation Claw-Lock, which Ankara launched on November 20 in response to the November 13 Istanbul bombing.
Turkey claims that the operation is aimed against Kurdish forces in northern Syria and Iraq. Nevertheless, at least 25 service members of the SAA have been killed in Turkish strikes since the start of the operation.
The Turkish military and its proxies are currently preparing to launch a ground offensive against the SDF. Russia has reportedly warned the SDF and asked the group to hand over its territory along the border line with Turkey to the SAA’s 5th Corps. However, the group refused.
By deploying reinforcements in key border areas like Kobane, the SAA is likely preparing to take over if the SDF was eventually forced to pullback.
