The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) “neutralized” a senior commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its Syrian affiliate, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), in a recent special operation in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, Turkish security sources told the Anadolu Agency on March 19.
The sources told the state-run news agency that the Kurdish commander, Mehmet Yıldırım, was “neutralized” in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood late in February.
The term “neutralized” is usually used by official Turkish sources to imply that the person in question was killed, wounded or captured.
Yıldırım joined the PKK, designated by Ankara as a terrorist group, in 1986. He was engaged in its activities in Turkey and Iraq before relocating to Syria in 2015. The commander, also known by his nom de guerre “Hamza Kobani,” was reportedly in charge of financial affairs of the PKK and YPG in Aleppo city and the nearby Kurdish-held area of Tell Rifat.
Syrian government forces expelled rebels from the eastern part of Aleppo city in 2016. However, the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood is still under the control of the YPG.
The MİT stepped up its operations against Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq in recent years. In 2022 alone, the agency “neutralized” 23 senior commanders of the PKK, YPG and other Kurdish guerilla groups in both Iraq and Syria.
Last January, the MİT targeted a senior commander of the PKK-affiliated Marxist–Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) in the northeastern Syrian governorate of al-Hasakah.
