On Thursday, the Turkish authorities announced that the Turkish Security Forces had arrested a Russian citizen, Renat Bakiev, accused of being an ISIS member and planning an attack at the Incirlik Air Base in Adana, southern Turkey.
Renat Bakiev had planned to destroy a US warplane inside Incirlik base with a DIY armed drone in support of ISIS, according to Anadolu Agency. Bakiev requested 2800 Turkish liras (less than 800 USD) from ISIS via Telegram app to carry out the operation, according to the agency.
The source added that Bakiev admitted to that he is an ISIS member and that he had previously tried to carry out attacks against US troops when he was in Syria but did not succeed. Bakiev also admitted that he intended to attack the Alawite minority in Syria.
This case reflects the significant security threat posed by commercial drones after several terrorist organizations in Syria, including ISIS, have developed simple methods to convert them into armed drones capable of striking their targets with relatively high accuracy. ISIS had used such armed drone heavily against Iraqi forces during the battle of Mosul.
Silly turkeys. Shoulda let him bomb some US warplanes and THEN arrested him
