On September 6, unidentified gunmen attacked service members of the Turkish Armed Forces in the southern part of Syria’s Greater Idlib.
The Turkish service members were reportedly standing near a shop in the vicinity of the town of Arihah when they were targeted by gunmen riding in a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. The gunmen quickly fled the scene towards the M4 highway.
According to several opposition sources, two Turkish service members were injured as a result of the attack. At least one of them is in a critical condition.
Some sources claimed that the injured Turkish service members were evacuated by helicopters. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
This was the third such attack on Turkish troops in Greater Idlib. On June 5, gunmen killed a Turkish soldier and injured another near the city of Idlib. Later on August 28, a suicide bombing targeted a position of the Turkish Armed Forces in the region’s southern part.
While the perpetrators of the June 5 attack remain unknown, a new jihadi group calling itself “Saryat Ansar Abu Bakr al-Siddiq” claimed responsibility for the August 28 bombing.
Minutes after the new attack in Arihah, the official Telegram channel of Saryat Ansar Abu Bakr al-Siddiq shared a post “parsing God.” This indicates that the group may be behind the latest attack. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense is yet to release a statement on the incident.
