On February 16, an elderly man was killed when the Turkish military shelled the town of Tell Rifaat in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
Tell Rifaat is controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, the Syrian Arab Army maintains a large presence in the town and its surroundings. A unit of the Russian Military Police is also deployed there.
The SDF-linked Hawar News Agency identified the victim as 70-year-old Yusuf Abd. The agency said that another elderly man was wounded in the Turkish shelling on Tell Riffat.
The deadly shelling came as the northern Aleppo countryside is experiencing a humanitarian crisis after the February 6 Turkish-Syrian earthquake. Both government and opposition-held areas in Aleppo were badly affected by the earthquake, which left more than 42,000 people dead in both Turkey and Syria.
The Turkish military and Kurdish forces resumed attacks against each other in the northern Aleppo countryside just a day after the devastating earthquake.
The most notable attack was a Turkish drone strike that targeted a vehicle near the town of Kobane, a stronghold of the SDF, on February 12. A financial official of the so-called Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria was reportedly killed in the strike.
Tensions will likely continue to rise in the northern Aleppo countryside. However, a confrontation between the Turkish military and the SDF remains highly unlikely.
