Late on October 27, the Turkish military and its proxies shelled several positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.
The shelling killed a soldier of the SAA and wounded at least five others. All six casualties were reportedly manning a position near the village of Tell al-Ward. There were no losses in the ranks of the SDF, whose fighters are also present in the village.
A unit of the Russian Military Police backed by several helicopters was dispatched to inspect the targeted positions. As a result, the Turkish shelling quickly came to an end.
The SAA established several positions in the northern al-Hasakah countryside in the fall of 2019 to monitor the frontline between Turkish forces and the SDF as a part of a Russian-brokered agreement. The Russian Military Police have been operating in the area ever since.
The deadly attack on SAA positions in the area may have been the result of misfire. However, it is still a major escalation by the Turkish military and its proxies.
Turkish warplanes and artillery hit several positions of the SAA in SDF territory in northern and northeastern Syria in the last few months. Dozens of Syrian soldiers were killed or wounded as a result of these attacks. In most cases, the army responded.
Syrian and Turkish government have been in talks to restore ties for more than a month. The recent Turkish attacks will most certainly have a negative impact on these talks.
