A Turkish soldier was killed in an attack by Kurdish forces in northwestern Syria on December 3, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced.
The attack targeted a Turkish military position near the town of Xezwe in northwestern Aleppo. The Turkish MoD claimed that troops fired back, neutralizing six of the attackers. The term “neutralize” is usually used to imply that the fighters in questions were killed or injured.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that three other Turkish service members were injured in the attack.
According to the Turkish MoD’s statement, operations were still ongoing in the vicinity of Xezwe. Drones are supporting Turkish troops.

Turkey claimed that the attack was carried out by the People’s Protection Units, YPG. However, Kurdish sources said the Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) were behind the attack.
In September, the ALF targeted the Turkish position in Xezwe with several anti-tank guided missiles. The attack injured several service members and resulted in heavy material losses.
The ALF was formed following the Turkish occupation of Afrin in 2018. Since then, the Kurdish group has carried out dozens of attacks against the Turkish military and its proxies in northeastern, northern and northwestern Aleppo. Several Turkish service members and scores of Syrian militants were killed by the group.
