In the last four days the Turkish Army was engaging the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) near the town of Şemdinli in the Hakkari province. The operation take place near the borders of Iran and Iraq, and involve aviation, armored vehicles and artillery. The Turkish media describe the situation as a police operation.
Reportedly, the action intensified on September 24, when a PKK unit had attacked a Turkish outpost near Şemdinli. According to Turkish sources, one Turkish soldier was killed and four soldiers were injured during the attack from the highlands.
The Turkish Army moved on to the supposed Kurdish positions in the mountains first, and then raided Kurdish towns, Şemdinli amongst them. From the 26th to the 27th of September, three clashes took place near the town. Turkish command reports “eliminating 12 Kurdish terrorists”.
The Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum that took place on September 25, has been a matter of unrest to Turkey, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan having threatened Kurdistan with economic, security and military measures as a response to the referendum. Turkey and Iraq started joint military training maneuvers on the Iraqi Kurdistan border the day after the referendum.

First of all, the PKK is considered a terrorist organization by US, EU and Israel, not only by Turkey. Secondly, in Turkey there is a Kurdish party in the parliament. PKK with terrorism, delegitimizes the aspirations of the Kurdish people. A “policing” action followed by raiding kurdish towns which implies firstly, and rightly, that the towns are not turkish and secondly that Turkey is not in control of those city and considers it unlikely they will come into control of them, because then what is the point of raiding : causing damage without taking (or being able to) control.
It is highly likely that 12 civillians were killed as in Turkey any kurd, any opposition, is being a terrorist.
