On February 13, a fighter of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was killed and two others were wounded when a series of Turkish artillery strike hit the outskirts of the town of Ain Issa in the northern countryside of Raqqa, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The London-based monitoring group said that the fighters were overseeing the construction of fortifications near Ain Issa refugee camp.
From its side, the Hawar News Agency reported that Turkish artillery strikes on Ain Issa outskirts killed a civilian man. The agency identified the victim as 35-year-old Muhyiddin Hajj Ahmed Ibrahim.
The Turkish artillery strikes were not surprising. Turkish forces and the SDF have been exchanging blows in northern and northeastern Syria for the last few weeks.
Just a day earlier, a missile attack attributed to the SDF wounded five civilians near Turkish-occupied town of Jarabulus in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo. In response, a Turkish combat drone targeted a vehicle in the center of Amuda town in the northern al-Hasakah countryside, wounding several people.
The current escalation between Turkish forces and the SDF in northern and northeastern Syria will not likely end soon. Each side appears to be determined to deter the other.
