On February 14, Turkish-backed militants shot down a Syrian military helicopter (reportedly Mi-8) in western Aleppo. The crew died in the incident. According to reports, the incident allegedly took place in the area west of Qabtan al-Jabal.
Most likely the aircraft was downed by a MANPAD. Local sources report that recently Turkey provided Idlib groups (including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) with a number of such missiles.
This was the second Syrian military helicopter downed by Turkish-backed militants since the start of February. On February 11, a Syrian military helicopter was downed by a MANPAD near the village of Nayrab in eastern Idlib.

Very brave and skilled pilots, but the problem with rotary aircraft is their inability to glide and they drop like stones, especially at higher altitude. The pilots are struggling to keep it stable but gravity takes over. RIP indeed, their bravery and sacrifice is paying off.
Actually helicopters will have the ability to decent slowly even with dead engines. Its named autorotation. Only if the fuselage or the rotors are destroyed they will fall like stones.
Yes, but these are very old choppers with basic hydraulic controls. I have never flown rotary aircraft but traveled in quite a few, the Chinooks appeared very hard to control and the pilots would struggle in headwinds.
Normally, if controls are in neutral position, the helicopter would go up straight. In case of engine failure the controls are used for a forward direction only, but could also be kept in neutral. Helicopter balances and will not go into a dive. Only if controls stuck or if propellers are damaged, it starts tumbling. Same if the fuselage is damaged, the propellers stuck, or the tail section is separated. In such case, it drops fast.
Even very old rotary wing aircraft can auto rotate if there is enough height. The collective is set to zero pitch and the pilot flares just before landing. This would normally happen because of engine failure, the aircraft is at its most vulnerable at engine failure hovering at low heights. In a battle situation auto rotation may not be possible due to injury/ death of the pilot or damage to the aircraft.
The problem is that pilots try to keep the heli in flight when they can escape with their parachute…but they can be captured and tortured!

Interesting to see the Tigers having a rest, Liwa-al-Quds and NDF are at the frontlines in 46th Regiment area. Where will the Tigers pop up next? According to a FSA statement it was the National Front for Liberations Air defense battalion that shot down the Syrian chopper, so they actually have a designated battalion to defend their airspace, that’s a real worry, it means these units are trained and equipped with one specific purpose in mind, to kill Russian and Syrian air assets. To stay safe the Russians and Syrians will have to fly higher but unfortunately that’ll make the civilians less safe, higher altitude means lower accuracy, so the Turks are killing 2 birds with the one stone, less accuracy minimises terrorist casualties which helps the terrorists directly, but it’ll also increase civilian casualties as well, which indirectly helps the terrorists. The worst thing that can happen for Assad now is also the best thing that can happen for Erdogan, growing civilian casualties, so we should be doing our utmost to minimise them, don’t give the US and UN any reason to accommodate Erdogan’s demands, give them absolutely nothing to complain about.
