Turkish Troops Came Under Attack Near M4 Highway In Syria’s Greater Idlib

On January 31, a Turkish military post located on the M4 highway in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib came under attack.

Unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire at Turkish service members guarding the post, which is stationed in the area of Abu al-Zubair near the town of Muhambal.

Accordig to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, two Turkish service members were injured in the attack. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense is yet to confirm or deny the monitoring group’s claims.

Three Turkish service members, who were manning a post in the town of Batabo in northern Idlib, were injured on January 16 when gunmen targeted them with sniper rifles.

Back then, a jihadi group calling itself “Saryat Ansar Abu Baker As-Siddiq” claimed responsibility for the attack. The group was behind two previous attacks against Turkish troops in Greater Idlib, on November 27 and December 6.

Turkish forces maintain more than 60 posts, bases and camps throughout Greater Idlib. Thousands of heavily armed troops are deployed there, mainly along the M4 which links the port city of Lattakia with Aleppo city.

The mysterious jihadi group, which appears to be linked to al-Qaeda, may be behind today’s attack too. So far, Turkey has done nothing to address al-Qaeda’s large presence in Greater Idlib.
