Twin Blasts Kill At Least 5 In Baghdad, As Questions Regarding 'ISIS Defeat' Need Repeated Asking

At least 5 were killed in twin suicide blasts in Baghdad, Iraq on July 15th. Doctors at the capital’s al-Yarmuk hospital gave a casualty toll of five dead and 14 wounded.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up near Abu al-Fadhel al-Abbas mosque in the Al-Turath district, a police officer told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for attacks targeting crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

Naturally, the natural consideration is the following:

What would the activity of ISIS in Iraq be, if it wasn’t announced as “defeated” in December 2017?

Since one and a half years later ISIS commanders and members are being hunted and various attacks continue taking place.

The July 15th attack would’ve been accompanied most likely by victims of a booby-trapped vehicle in eastern Baghdad, if security forces hadn’t discovered and dismantled it.

In a press statement, the source said, “Today, security forces discovered a booby-trapped vehicle parked on the roadside, in al-Na’ireya area, in eastern Baghdad.”

At the same time, the Popular Mobilization Units announced that they had captured two ISIS leaders in the Kirkuk Province.

Just a day earlier, security forces dismantled an ISIS explosive factory in the same province. 10 explosive devices were discovered.

Security forces killed eight terrorists in the Siniya island, west of Salahuddin province.

PMU forces dismantled ISIS’ largest hideout in Hamrin Mount.

Reports such as the above mentioned are constant,so is ISIS really defeated if it requires so much activity to simply keep down, and terror attacks continue taking place?

To provide some details into the situation, here is a short overview of recent ISIS terror attacks in Iraq alone:

  • Roadside bomb explosion killed two Iraqi people in Kirkuk Province on July 10th;
  • Bomb blast rocked Iraq’s Diyala and left two farmers wounded on July 7th;
  • Bomb attack wounded two Iraqi soldiers in Diyala province on July 1st;
  • 1 was killed and 24 others were injured when bombs struck two crowded buses in the city of Kirkuk, on June 27th;
  • Two civilians were killed and 5 others were wounded when Islamic State militants attacked the house of a tribal leader in al-Khazrajiyah village in al-Baaj area of Nineveh Province. The deaths included the wife and his daughter and among the injuries was the tribal leader, also on June 27th;
  • A roadside bomb in the city of Kirkuk killed five policemen on June 25th.

These are some of the most recent ones, every several days throughout 2019 there has been an attack by ISIS that has either wounded dozens or taken the lives of civilians or security forces.

How defeated is ISIS, really?
