On October 17, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported on the ongoing military developments in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military launched several attempts to break through Russian defences in different regions but failed.
A battalion tactical group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) made an unsuccessful attempt to launch an offensive towards the village of Stryapovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic at Lisichansk direction. Ukrainian forces were repelled back to their positions. Over 50 Ukrainian servicemen, 6 tanks, 2 armoured combat vehicles and 4 pickups were destroyed.
Another failed offensive operation took place on front lines in the Kherson region. Russian troops prevented an attempt made by AFU units to break the defence near the village of Bruskinskoye located 8 kilometres to the south-east of Davidov Brod. Over 100 Ukrainian servicemen, 13 armoured combat vehicles and 8 motor vehicles were destroyed.
The AFU also suffered heavy losses in the Kharkov region. Russian artillery and warplanes shelled military positions of the 14th and 92nd mechanised brigades of the AFU near Sinkovka, Petropavlovsk, Peschanoye, Ivanovka and Berestovoye in the Kupyansk area. During the day, 160 Ukrainian servicemen, 4 armoured combat vehicles, 2 artillery guns, 1 pickup and 2 motor vehicles were destroyed, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.
39 artillery units at their firing positions, 2 command posts and 127 military positions of the AFU were destroyed by Russian forces near the village of Dvurechnaya in the Kharkov region and Drobyshevo in the DPR. 6 Ukrainian munitions depots were destroyed near Figolevka in the Kharkov region, Verkhnekamenskoye, Soledar in the DPR, Novogrigorovka in the Nikolayev region, Novopetrovka and Davydov Brod in the Kherson region.
In the Nikolaev region, a storage of fuel for AFU military equipment was destroyed near the city of Nikolayev. A spot for military equipment repar works was destroyed near Bereznegovatoye.
Ukrainian losses also included a Ukrainian Smerch MLRS battery and a U.S.-made M777 howitzer battery, as well as 9 UAVs.
Russian air defence forces intercepted 21 projectiles launched by HIMARS and Olkha MLRS as well as 2 U.S.-manufactured HARM anti-radar missiles.
