Two Egyptian Soldiers Killed In Suicide Bombing, Clashes Near Suez Canal

On November 27, two soldiers were reportedly killed when ISIS cells attacked a key checkpoint of Egyptian government forces near the Suez Canal.

The attack on the checkpoint, which is commonly known as the Thulathi, started with a suicide bombing then terrorists moved on foot and exchanged fire with government troops. The terrorists apparently came from the western part of the Sinai Peninsula.

The Egyptian Armed Forces quickly dispatched reinforcements to support the checkpoint personnel. Still, clashes went on for several hours before ISIS terrorists fled.

Citing Egyptian medical sources, the New Arab said that two soldiers were killed during the bold attack. According to the London-based outlet, a police officer was also wounded.

This was not ISIS’s first attack near Suez Canal. Exactly a week earlier, the group’s terrorists stormed the city of el-Qantara on the eastern bank of the canal. The quick and professional intervention of the Egyptian Air Force pushed the terrorists out from the city. However, two officers and five soldiers were killed.

Earlier this year, the Egyptian military deployed several units of the elite Airborne Corps and the El-Sa’ka Forces in western Sinai to keep ISIS cells away from the Suez Canal. This was not enough apparently. Additional military and security measures are without a doubt needed to secure the vital canal.
