The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on June 21 that reservists were killed as a result of a mortar attack in the central Gaza Strip a day earlier.
The soldiers were both serving in the ranks of the Alexandroni Brigade’s 9203rd Battalion. Three other soldiers from the same unit were seriously wounded in the incident, the IDF said in a statement.
The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Gaza-ruling Hamas Movement, claimed responsibility for the mortar fire, saying it had targeted a position of the IDF near Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.
Separately, two soldiers of the IDF’s 401st Armored Brigade’s 46th Battalion were seriously wounded during fighting in southern Gaza’s Rafah earlier on June 20. The pair were wounded as a result of anti-tank fire, according to an initial IDF probe.
The attack was also claimed by the al-Qassam Brigades, which said that its fighters targeted two Merkava main battle tanks and two Eitan armored fighting vehicles of the IDF with rocket-propelled grenades in Rafah’s Sheborah refugee camp.
Additionally, al-Qassam Brigades released videos showing clashes with the IDF in Rafah, an Israeli quadcopter drone that was captured there and an attack with a suicide drone that targeted gathering of Israeli troops in the settlement of Holit near Gaza.
The latest deaths brought the toll of slain Israeli troops in ground operations in Gaza and along its border to 314. The toll includes a police officer killed in a hostage rescue mission. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor was also killed in the Strip.
More than 1,900 others have been wounded in Gaza during the same period. Some are reportedly still in a life-threatening condition.
On the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war reached 37,431 with more than 85,653 others wounded, according to the latest statement by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. Women and children make up most of the casualties.
Despite taking more losses and failing to achieve any of its military objectives, Israel will not likely agree to a ceasefire in Gaza anytime soon.
