On September 28 afternoon, an explosion rocked a building in the Şirinevler district of the Turkish city of Istanbul, leaving two people dead and several others wounded.
The powerful explosion sent shock waves through the neighborhood. Debris fell onto vehicles in the vicinity and windows in nearby buildings were shattered. Law enforcement, emergency health services and firefighting teams were quickly dispatched to the scene.
People residing in buildings nearby the scene of the explosion were evacuated by the authorities as a precautionary measure.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül announced the launch of an official investigation into the deadly explosion, promising a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
From his side, Bahçelievler Mayor Hakan Bahadır said that a natural gas explosion had caused the catastrophe. This is yet to be confirmed by the investigators.
Istanbul has been the target of several bombings in the past few years. On 13 November 2022, a blast rocked İstiklal Avenue in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, killing six people and wounding more than 80 others. No group has claimed responsibility, but Turkish authorities announced that Kurdish separatists were behind the attack, implicating the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the Syrian Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces.
