Two small bases of the Turkish military in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo came under attack on August 13.
In the morning, an anti-tank guided missile struck a guard post inside a Turkish base located in the northern outskirts of the town of Hazwan. The missile destroyed the post. However, no casualties were reported.
Later in the noon, an attack with indirect fire targeted a Turkish bases near the town of Tuways. It is still unclear if the attack resulted in any casualties.
Following the attacks on Hazwan and Tuways bases, the Turkish military and its proxies shelled several towns held by the SDF in the northern Aleppo countryside. No casualties were reported as a result of the shelling, which was likely just an initial response.
These were the sixth and seventh attacks to target Turkish military bases in the northern Aleppo countryside in less than a month. The Afrin Liberation Forces, a Kurdish guerilla group that is said to be a proxy of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), claimed responsibility for all previous attacks. Most of the attacks in question results in human and material losses.
The recent attacks on Turkish military bases in the northern Aleppo countryside appears to be a response to Turkey’s repeated artillery and drone strikes on SDF-held areas in norther and northeastern Syria. The attacks were likely also meant to deter Ankara, who has been threatening the SDF with a new military operation for a while now.
