Two rocket strikes targeted the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The highly-fortified area hosts key government buildings as well as foreign missions, including the U.S. embassy.

The first strike took place in the late hours of August 27. According to the Iraqi Security Media Cell, three “Katyusha” rockets were launched from the district of Jadriyah, to the south of the Green Zone. The rockets landed in an empty square inside the zone.

A few hours later, early on August 28, a second strike with two “Katyusha” rockets targeted the Green Zone. The strike, which was launched from Baijiyah, didn’t cause any losses. The rockets’ launchers were uncovered by security forces.

Sabereen News, a Telegram channel close to Iraqi Shiite armed groups, said the C-RAM [Counter rocket, artillery, and mortar] system, which has been recently deployed by the U.S. military in the Green Zone, was not activated.

The rocket strikes were the most recent in a series of attacks on U.S. forces and diplomatic mission in Iraq.

Shiite armed groups affiliated with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are allegedly responsible for these attacks. Many of these groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah, vowed to expel U.S. troops from Iraq following the assassination of Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis earlier this year.
