Two commercial vessels were reportedly damaged on June 8 after being attacked separately in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen.
Ambrey, a British security firm, reported that an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged general cargo ship was struck by a missile 83 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni port city of Aden, causing a fire that was later contained.
The firm also said that the ship’s crew reported a second missile was sighted but did not hit the ship. In addition, gunmen on board small boats in the vicinity opened fire on the ship during the incident, but there were no injuries reported as a result of the attack.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported an incident approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden.
A vessel was struck by an “unknown projectile” on its aft section, resulting in a fire, but no casualties were reported, according to the UKMTO.
The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have not yet acknowledged the attacks reported by UKMTO and Ambbrey, though it typically takes them hours to issue a claim.
The Iran-backed group has attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since November in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
Since January, U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
