Turkish Army Kirpi MRAP on duty somewhere in southern Turkey.

Two Turkish soldiers were killed and two others were wounded in an attack on an armored vehicle in northern Syria.

Turkish MRAP Kirpi was targeted with a guided missile on its way to a military base in the vicinity of the town of al-Bab, northern Aleppo province.

“In an attack carried out by terrorists against our Kirpi vehicle in the Operation Euphrates Shield zone, two of our fellow hero soldiers were martyred and two of our friends were injured,” the Ministry of National Defense said on Twitter.

The ministry said that Turkish forces had immediately launched retaliatory fire.

“Our punitive fire against terrorist positions is continuing,” the statement reads.

Kurdish forces, who have recently increased a number of their attacks on Turkish forces, may be behind the strike.

Turkey launched the operation Euphrates Shield in 2016 to drive away ISIS fighters and the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Turkish forces and Turkish-backed militants are targeted by Kurdish militants on a regular basis. For example, ALF released videos of three recent attacks on Turkish forces in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

Turkish forces occupy much of the northern Aleppo countryside. The situation in the region is far from being stable. The killing of Turkish soldiers will certainly lead to a new escalation.

Turkish convoys are attacked both in Syria and Iraq. On July 17, a Turkish military convoy came under attack while it was passing in Zilkan in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
