Two Syrian Intelligence Officers Killed In Attacks Near Damascus

On July 30, two officers of the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate (MID) were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint they were manning near the town of Dayr Makir in the southern countryside of Damascus, according to Syrian opposition news sources.

The gunmen opened fire at the checkpoint from firearms equipped with silencers then fled the scene without being noticed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the alleged attack, so far. Dayr Makir is located near the administrative border of al-Quneitra governorate, where several similar attacks were reported in the last few years.

The Syrian military, intelligence and security forces maintain a tight grip over the countryside of Damascus. However, several terrorist groups, including ISIS and al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, are known to be present in the region.

If confirmed, this would be the second terrorist attack to take place near the Syrian capital in July. On the 7th of the month, two soldiers of the Syrian military’s elite 4th Division were killed as a result of an attack in the town of Asal Alward, which is located in the Western Qalamun mountain chain.

Damascus and its countryside are considered very safe. Nevertheless, more security measures appear to be needed to prevent small-scale terrorist attacks.
