Syrian service members continue to be targeted in the southern governorate of Daraa despite the ongoing Russian-sponsored reconciliation process.

On October 6, two police officers were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen near the town of Izraa in the northern countryside of Daraa, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency. The two victims were identified as Walid Adnan al-Ottoman and Abdullah Khalil al-Izzo.

The attack came a few days only after the start of the Russian-sponsored reconciliation process in the northern Daraa countryside.

On October 7, the Syrian Arab Army launched a combing operation in Jasim, which was the first town in the northern countryside to join the reconciliation process.

Local sources in Daraa reported that the towns of Inkhil and Jasim will join the reconciliation process in the matter of a few days.

As a the Russian-sponsored reconciliation process nears its end in the northern countryside of Daraa, several towns in the eastern countryside of the governorate are preparing to join the process once it begins in their region. The towns are reportedly Nassib, Om Elmiathin and al-Taebah.

While the reconciliation process provided more stability in Daraa, the recent attack near Izraa indicates that more should be done to secure the governorate.

Imagine the casualties for all sides if the Syrian and Russian governments did nothing?

They are certainly on the right path. History will look back favourably for these efforts towards peace.
