On September 18, two soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were killed in a series of Turkish airstrikes that hit the eastern outskirt of the border town of Kobane in Syria’s northeastern region.
Kobane, one of the largest urban centers in northeastern countryside of Aleppo, is a stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SAA established a network of positions in the town and its outskirts in the wake of the 2019 Turkish invasion of the northeastern region.
The airstrikes were a response to an indirect fire attack that targeted a Turkish border post near Kobane in the morning. Turkey said that one of its soldiers was killed and four others were wounded as a result of the attack, which was blamed on Kurdish forces.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense released footage documenting five airstrikes on positions and fortifications of the SDF and the SAA near the village of Qarmugh.
Last month, three SAA soldiers were killed in a similar wave of Turkish airstrikes that also targeted the outskirts of Kobane. The airstrikes were also a response to an indirect fire attack that was allegedly carried out by the SDF. Back then, two Turkish soldiers were killed as a result of the attack.
The deadly Turkish airstrikes came amid ongoing talks between Turkey and Syria. The intelligence chiefs of the two countries held a series of constructive meetings in the Syrian capital, Damascus, over the last few weeks, according to a recent Reuters report. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already singled his willingness to meet his Syrian counterparts Bashar al-Assad.
By stepping up its attacks on Turkish forces, the SDF may be attempting to sabotage the ongoing Turkish-Syrian talks. The group understand very well that it will be the biggest loser of any rapprochement between the two countries.
