On October 1, two police officers were slightly wounded when two gunmen detonated a bomb in front of the General Directorate of Security headquarters in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
“Two terrorists, who arrived in a light commercial vehicle in front of the gate of the General Directorate of Security, carried out a bomb attack. One of the terrorists blew himself up and the other terrorist was neutralized,” Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X, previously known as Twitter.
The two wounded police officers were being treated in a hospital and were not in serious condition, Turkish media reports said.
Following the attack, entrances and exits to the Grand National Assembly, which is located near the headquarters of the General Directorate of Security, were temporarily closed due to security measures. The attack occurred as the assembly was set to reopen with an address by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after a three-month break.
Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the attack and the Criminal Court of Peace has issued a media access and publication ban.
There was no immediate information on the attackers. Kurdish and far-left militant groups as well as ISIS have carried out deadly attacks throughout Turkey in the past.
