On the evening of December 2, Russian air defense systems shot down two Ukrainian S-200 missiles over the waters of the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian military likely targeted the Crimean Bridge or a shipyard in the city of Kerch, but the attack failed.

After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine received large stocks of S-200 missiles, which were subsequently withdrawn from service. In 2014, the decommissioning of the Ukrainian S-200VM began, and in 2016, the last division of the 540th Lviv Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment was formally decommissioned. The S-200 missile with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead contains up to 91 kilograms of TG-20 explosive and 37 thousand striking elements. When used against ground targets, it is capable of damaging the area of up to 200 meters.
