U.S. Army Says It Hit Houthi Air Defense System After Attacks On Ships Near Yemen

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on August 22 that its forces destroyed a surface-to-air missile and radar system in an area controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen.

The systems presented “a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said in a statement, adding that “action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”

Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that three “American-British” strikes hit the area of Salif near the Red Sea port city of al-Hodeidah on August 21. The news channel didn’t report any casualties. These strikes were likely the ones announced by CENTCOM.

The U.S. strikes came after two machine vessels sailing near Yemen’s waters were targeted in separate attacks blamed on the Houthis.

The Greek-owned Sounion oil tanker was first hit by gunfire from two small boats which approached it early on August 21 about 77 nautical miles west of al-Hodeidah, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) office. Later, the vessel was struck by three unidentified projectiles, which sparked a fire onboard and left it without engine power, the office said. There were no reports of injuries among its crew.

Also on August 21, the UKMTO reported three explosions in the water near the Panama-flagged cargo vessel SW North Wind I as it sailed through the Gulf of Aden. It added that the crew was safe following the incidents, which happened 57 nautical miles south of the Yemeni port city of Aden, and the vessel was proceeding to the next port of call.

Over the last nine months, the Houthis targeted dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

Additionally, the group’s air defenses shot down at least seven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

During the same period, the group also launched from Yemen more than 220 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and suicide drones at Israel, mostly toward the Red Sea port city of Eilat in the south, according to the Israeli military.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group, but to no avail. Israel also launched an attack against al-Hodeidah port last month after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv, but was met with more threats by the group.
