The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on February 14 that its forces destroyed a missile of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen and tracked the launch of another by the group into the Gulf of Aden a day earlier.
In a statement posted on the X social platform, previously known as Twitter, the command said that a mobile anti-ship cruise missile was destroyed in a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen in a “self-defense strike”.
Anti-ship ballistic missile was also launched from an area held by the group into the Gulf of Aden, according to the command, which said that U.S. Navy ships tracked the missile but took no action because the missile was not projected to impact near any ships. It added that there were no reports of injuries or damage from ships in the area.
“U.S. forces will continue to take actions that protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. navy and merchant vessels,” CENTCOM said in its statement.
More strikes hit Yemen on February 14. Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that six “American-British” strikes hit the areas of Ras Issa and al-Jabbana in the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeidah. However, the news channel didn’t report any casualties.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 28,000 Palestinains.
The U.S. and the UK retaliated by carrying out dozens of strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent weeks. However, the group remains undeterred.
Earlier this week, the Houthis demonstrated their capabilities once again by attacking the Star Iris cargo ship in the Red Sea. The ship, which belongs to the U.S.-owned Greek company Star Bulk Carriers, received damage as a result of the attack.
