U.S. Army Says It Struck Two Houthis Vessels In Red Sea

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on August 14 that its forces destroyed two vessels of the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the Red Sea a day earlier.

The command didn’t provide any details on the type of the vessel, nor clarified if they were manned by Houthi personnel when they were targeted.

“These vessels presented a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said in a statement. “This reckless and dangerous behavior by Iranian-backed Houthis continues to threaten regional stability and security.”

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, on August 13 issued reports of two separate incidents involving explosions in the Red Sea near Yemen.

The first incident occurred approximately 63 nautical miles southwest of the port city of al-Hodeidah, which is held by the Houthis. According to the UKMTO, a vessel master in the area reported an explosion at a distance from the ship. The vessel and its crew were reported safe, and the ship continued its journey to its next port of call.

A second incident was reported 97 nautical miles northwest of al-Hodeidah. In this case, the master of another vessel reported an explosion in the vicinity. As with the first incident, both crew and vessel were unharmed, and the ship proceeded with its planned route.

Following the two explosions, the UKMTO advised all vessels transiting through the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down seven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its military capabilities Israel also launched an aerial attack against al-Hodeidah last month after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv. However, the group remains undeterred.
