U.S. Army Says Its Forces Destroyed Houthi Drones In Red Sea, Struck Radars In Yemen

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on June 15 that its forces destroyed more weapons of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the Red Sea and struck radars used by the group in Yemen over the past 24 hours.

In a statement, the command said it destroyed two Houthi uncrewed boats and intercepted an aerial drone that was launched by the group in the Red Sea.

Seven radars were also destroyed in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen, CENTCOM added, noting that the group used these radars to target maritime vessels and endanger commercial shipping.

“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said. “This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”

In a separate statement, CENTCOM provided an update on the status of two merchant vessels which were hit by the Houthis earlier in the week.

Tutor, a Liberian flagged, Greek owned and operated bulk cargo carrier, is slowly taking in water in the Red Sea, according to the command, which noted that one civilian mariner remains missing following the attack while the remaining crew members were evacuated by its forces and allies.

Meanwhile, the crew of Verbena, a Palauan flagged, Ukrainian owned, Polish operated bulk cargo carrier, extinguished the fire caused by the attack and resumed their transit in the Gulf of Aden, the command said.

Since last November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
