A senior United States official said on September 4 that Washington had no information indicating missiles were launched toward American bases in Jordan, following reports of an attack on the country.
“At this stage, we are unaware of any missiles being launched toward U.S. bases in Jordan,” Israel’s Channel 12 quoted the unnamed official as saying.
The channel and several other Hebrew and Arab media news outlets had earlier claimed that Iran fired ballistic missiles toward a U.S. base in Jordan but provided no details about the purported target or the outcome of the alleged attack. Videos that surfaced online also showed what appears to be interceptions over the kingdom.
Iran carried out two waves of strikes against American forces in the region on September 2 and 3 in response to deadly U.S. attacks that targeted its southern and southeastern regions over the weekend.
Ahead of the latest reports of a missile strike on Jordan, a spokesman for the Iranian army said that the Islamic Republic has been gradually shifting its military doctrine toward preemptive attack.
“When we face an American threat, we defend ourselves, and international law allows us to defend ourselves preemptively,” Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akraminia said during a program broadcast by Iran’s state television.
Also earlier in the day, The New York Times published a report revealing that the U.S. intelligence assessments have become increasingly pessimistic regarding the possibility of ending the war on Iran in the near future. The assessments indicate that Tehran has developed a more refined understanding of its own strengths and the limits of American power over the past six months.
According to those who have reviewed the intelligence evaluations, there are currently few indicators that Tehran is prepared to offer a broad deal to the U.S.
Some American officials even believe that Iran sees benefit in the continuation of the war as long as its political costs accumulate within the U.S., the report stated.
All recent developments indicate that a deal between the U.S. and Iran to end the war will not come any time soon, and while a return to full-on war is unlikely, the ongoing low-intensity conflict could drag on for months, if not years. This situation is ultimately playing in favor of the Islamic Republic.
