The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Mason had shot down a drone and anti-ship ballistic missile which were launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) from Yemen over the Red Sea on December 28, the United States Central Command said in a statement.
According to the command’s statement, there was no damage to any of the 18 ships in the area or reported injuries as a result of the attack attempt.
“This is the 22nd attempted attack by Houthis on international shipping since October 19,” the statement reads.
Houthi spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sari has not mentioned an attack on ships on December 28 nor has Saba, the Yemeni state-run media site.
The Houthis, who control much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, are a part of the so-called Axis of Resistance that is backed by Iran and opposes Israel.
The group has fired several missiles and drones at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat since the beginning of the U.S.-backed Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip. It also assaulted a number of Israeli-owned ships and announced a blockade on all ships heading to Israel.
So far, at least 14 ships have been hit by the Houthis and another was seized and is currently being held with its crew in Yemen.
The Houthis’ blockade forced some of the world’s largest shipping companies to suspend operations in the Red Sea, causing a shipping crisis.
In response, the U.S. launched Operation Prosperity Guardian to “ensure the safety of maritime traffic” in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb and Gulf of Aden. However, the operation quickly ran into several problems. Spain, Italy and France refused to take part in the operation. Several other allies of Washington declined to send warships.
