Israel and the United States are working on defense deals that include the supply of fighter jets, attack helicopters and munitions amid the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel and Hebrew sources reported.
Defense Ministry Director-General Eyal Zamir discussed the deals with senior Pentagon and State Department officials as well as with executives from major U.S. defense companies during a work visit to Washington on January 25.
Defense sources told The Times of Israel that Israel’s plans to procure an additional squadron of 25 F35i stealth fighter jets, another squadron of 25 F-15IA fighter jets and a squadron of 12 Apache helicopters were advanced during the discussions.
During the discussions in Washington, the Israeli Defense Ministry delegation also worked to advance the continued supply of American munitions for the war with Hamas in Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 25,000 Palestinians most of whom were women and children.
The Times of Israel said that the deals have not yet been signed, despite a report by Israel’s Channel 12 news on claiming so.
Citing defense sources, the news channel said that Israel requested priority from the Americans for the supplies, given the development of the war in Gaza.
Since the outbreak of the war, 250 cargo planes and more than 20 ships have delivered more than 10,000 tons of American armaments and military equipment to Israel. The U.S. also vetoed several resolutions condemning Israel in the UN and engaged Hamas allies in Syria, Iraq and Yemen in order to support Israeli war efforts.
The new arms deals show that the U.S. is determined to support Israel at all costs. This will only encourage the Israeli leadership to go on with the war on Gaza and add to tensions in the Middle East.
