U.S. F-16 Made Dangerous Pass Near Russian Su-35 In Syrian Skies

In a new provocation, a F-16 fighter jet of the United States-led coalition made a dangerous pass near a Russian Aerospace Force Su-35 fighter jet over the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf on August 23.

The incident was revealed by Counter Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria.

“At 10:30 on August 23, in the at-Tanf area, a ‘coalition’ F-16 jet fighter dangerously approached a Russian Aerospace Force Su-35 performing a planned patrol of the southern border of Syria at an altitude of about 6,500 meters. The Russian pilot displayed high professionalism and took necessary measures to prevent a collision,” the commander said during a briefing on August 24.

According to Kulit, by this kind of actions, the U.S.-led coalition continues to create dangerous preconditions for aviation incidents and emergencies and escalates the situation in the Syrian airspace.

During his briefing, the commander also reported more violations over al-Tanf, where the coalition maintains a garrison with a 55-kilometer no-fly zone.

“A total of 19 violations were registered in the al-Tanf area: three pairs of F-35 jets, four pairs of F-16 jets, a pair of Rafale jets and three MQ-1C coalition multipurpose drones,” Kulit said.

The commander added that the aviation of the U.S.-led coalition continues creating dangerous situations in Syrian airspace.

“Nine violations of the December 9, 2019, deconfliction protocols by the coalition involving drone sorties, not negotiated with the Russian side, were registered in the past 24 hours,” Kulit underscored.

In addition to al-Tanf garrison, the U.S.-led coalition maintains a network of bases at key oil and gas fields in the northeastern governorate of Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah. The coalition says that it is present in Syria only to fight ISIS. However, the Syrian government does not approve of this deployment and considers it to be an occupation.

The coalition expanded its aerial operations over Syria in recent weeks leading to tensions with the Russian military group in the country. While a confrontation between the two sides is highly unlikely, Russia warned that the coalition’s repeated violation of Syria’s airspace could eventually lead to some incident.
