The United States-led coalition is searching for drones and anti-aircraft missiles near its garrison in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf.
On March 1, the coalition’s proxy in al-Tanf, the Syrian Free Army (SFA), released photos showing its militants distributing leaflets to people living near the garrison with instructions on how to report suspected caches, that could include drones or anti-aircraft missiles.

Around 200 U.S. troops and 300 SFA militants are usually deployed at al-Tanf. The coalition maintains a 55-kilometers no-fly zone around the garrison, which blocks a strategic highway between Syria and Iraq.
“The SFA and Coalition forces are working to educate the local populace about potential threats from drone attacks in the region. Efforts like this continue to improve the region’s awareness and stability leading to a better future for all,” Combined Special Ops Joint Task Force said on Twitter, commenting on the photos released by the SFA.
Al-Tanf garrison was attacked by three suicide drones on January 20. Two of the drones were shot down by coalition air defenses near al-Tanf. However, the third hit a compound within the garrison. The attack wounded at least three militants of the SFA.
A shadowy pro-Iranian group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq – al-Warithin Formation claimed responsibility for the last drone attack. The U.S.-led coalition has not yet responded to the attack.
The coalition is apparently worried that more attacks could target al-Tanf in the near future. The threat may be closer to the garrison this time.

If they’re looking for anti-aircraft missiles then they must know something the US public doesn’t. Perhaps some of those sophisticated Western MANPADS sent to the corrupt Ukrainian armed forces have found their way to the black market and now pose a threat to US military and civil aviation.
