On September 16, U.S. forces intercepted a unit of the Russian Military Police that was conducting a patrol in the northern al-Hasakah countryside in northeast Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
“A US military patrol took position on the M4 highway near the town of al-Qahtaniyah in the outskirt of al-Qamishli, to prevent Russian vehicles from crossing the highway,” the monitoring group said in a report.
The SOHR also revealed in its report that two U.S. and two Russian helicopters were flying over al-Qahtaniyah at the time of the incident.
Over the last few months, U.S. and Russian forces were involved in several similar incidents in northeast Syria. In some cases, the two sides engaged in hostile behavior, which was not reported this time.
Last month, seven U.S. service members were reportedly “lightly injured” in a standoff with Russian troops in northeast Syria.
The U.S. is now, once again, working to solidify its influence over northeast Syria. The presence of the Russian Military Police in the region poses a serious challenge to U.S. forces. These forces are now actively working to restrict Russian movements there.
