The United States is considering launching strikes against Venezuelan military targets allegedly used for drug-trafficking, The Wall Street Journal reported on October 31.
People familiar with the matter told the New York-based newspaper that senior officials in the Pentagon and State Department have discussed targeting airfields, warehouses and other facilities controlled by Venezuela’s military that U.S. intelligence says are used to store and transport cocaine. The discussions are, however, preliminary and no final decision has been made, according to the newspaper.
Tensions have been on the rise between the two countries since August, when the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump doubled the reward for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million on drug trafficking charges then deployed an amphibious ready group with thousands of marines close to the country’s shores on a so-called “counter narco-terror operation”.
Recent days saw even more escalation by the U.S., which sent its bombers near the country’s coast on three occasions and bolstered its naval deployment in the Caribbean with an entire carrier strike group.
The people who spoke to WSJ said that one facility under consideration is a military air base near the city of Barcelona, in eastern Venezuela, which U.S. officials believe is used to fly drugs to Central America and the Caribbean.
Another is a warehouse complex in the state of Apure, near the Colombian border, where intelligence suggests large quantities of cocaine are stored before being moved by river and road, they added.
The U.S. military has already carried out 14 strikes against boats allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing 61 people.
At least four were killed in the latest strike, which took place in the eastern Pacific and was announced by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on October 30.
“The Western Hemisphere is no longer a safe haven for narco-terrorists bringing drugs to our shores to poison Americans. The Department of War will continue to hunt them down and eliminate them wherever they operate,” Hegseth said on X after the strike.
Any strikes on Venezuela itself would require “careful planning to avoid civilian casualties and minimize the risk of broader conflict,” the people who spoke to WSJ said, adding that the U.S. military would likely use “precision-guided munitions launched from aircraft or drones operating outside Venezuelan airspace.”
The same people noted that the Trump administration is also weighing non-military options, including tighter sanctions on Venezuelan officials and increased support for opposition leader Edmundo González, who fled to Spain after the last election.
Venezuela has been actively preparing for a U.S. attack by mobilizing, deploying air defenses and conducting military exercises focused on decentralization.
It will be near impossible for the U.S. to attack military targets in Venezuela without causing a major escalation. This may be, however, exactly what the Trump administration is looking for. Any reaction could be used as a pretext to move towards a full-on regime change operation in Caracas. Trump has already refused to deny that the U.S. is pursuing the removal of Maduro.

several syrian cities witnessed citizens taking to the streets today in limited demonstrations against the syrian democratic forces “sdf”, including aleppo in saadallah al-jabri square, damascus in marjeh square, homs near the clock, latakia, tal abyad in the northern countryside of raqqa, and parts of the deir ez-zor countryside.
these moves came in response to widespread calls and mobilizations on social media, where organizers tried to mobilize the largest possible number of participants, but actual participation was limited to dozens in most cities, reflecting limited interaction despite the widespread digital spread of the calls.
the protesters raised banners demanding improved living conditions and basic services, criticizing
the policies of the sdf in the areas it controls, in addition to demanding security and stability and protecting the population from violations or abuses.

these protests appear to reflect citizens’ desire to express their demands and their rejection of the current reality, but they remain limited in size and scope, reflecting the complexities of the security and political situation in the country and the difficulty of organizing large-scale collective movements.
the demonstrations also indicate a continuing state of popular discontent, but they do not constitute a solution to the syrian crisis that has been ongoing for more than 14 years, in the absence of clear political steps towards a comprehensive solution that alleviates the suffering of the population in various regions
